Hello there folks:
I am quite new to the knife world. Only own a couple of knifes, both presents that I didn't choose myself. A Fox Hexagon and a Spyderco Delica 4, with the whole blade serrated.
Now I'm planning to buy a new folder, as I intend it to be a everyday carrier. I've been looking around quite a lot, different brands and models. Overall, the type of knife I want should be:
- Not to heavy
- Have a blade shorter than 4.4'' as anything longer is forbidden where I live.
- I've got used to the spyderco thumb hole, so I'd like my new blade to have it.
- I intend to use it for everyday, whatever comes use. I am police officer, so imagine the kind of things I'll have to cut.
- I was thinking of a straight blade, no serrations, coz my Delica is quite dulled now and I haven't have a clue on how to sharpen a knife, but a straight blade seems easier (I guess I'll have to send it to the factory for a re-sharpening)

The brands I've heard more about are Benchmade, Spyderco and Emerson, just to name a few. As I already have a Spyderco, I was thinking to change , if only to compare, and also, because though I really think the delica is a really good knife, the looks of the blade aren't exactly what I'd call perfect :)
Now, the blades that caught my eye most are Benchmades: The mini Skirmish, and the 550 Griptilian. The only downside of the 550 is that it hasn't have the thumbhole (I really like it). Also had a look at 5.11 and didn't dislike them either.
Now, if you've read so far, and I'm thankful for that, could you give me a hand and give this newb some advice?
Thanks a lot in advance

Yeah, sorry, that I forgot to explain, I'd like my blade to have a drop point blade, as the sheepsfoot doesnt have a point and i fint it useful sometimes

this is the benchmade vex, its a made in china benchmade, but the quality is good.

the benchmade 551 is really one of my favorite knives, and i have many, good size, light weight, easy to open and close. even though you like the hole better for opening, the benchmade 551 is still very easy to open.

emerson knives are really good too, but not many of their knives use the hole, only a few i think

If you like the hole and Spyderco's quality, you might want to look at the Sage. It's a different shape than the Delica you have, a bit larger, and a very good cutter. The current version is a carbon fiber scaled liner lock, but there is a Ti handled frame lock due out in 2009.

Also, the BM mini-Skirmish is within your size limitation. It has a drop-point S30V blade and an opening hole instead of studs. It's also a Ti handle, so it'll be fairly light and corrosion resistant. Don't know how grippy it will be, though. Then there's the Pika and mini-Pika as well as the Vex that has already been suggested.

I believe that all of the 5.11 blades are CE, so you'd still have to deal with some serrations with a 5.11.

Spyderco paramilitary only problem is your not looking for a spydie, I am pretty sure that one model of emerson knives has a hole in the blade.

Welcome to Bladeforums Carlos :)

You may want to pick-up a Spyderco sharpmaker. It's by far the easiest "beginner" sharpening system & even comes with an instructional DVD.

Welcome to BladeForums, sir. :)

If you're still considering Spyderco suggestions, the Para Military would probably be the best you could do out of any brand available---it's just a wonderful knife. If you're looking elsewhere, the Benchmade Griptilian is available with the patented SpyderHole in the blade; the Benchmade Dejavoo designed by Bob Lum is also equipped with a SpyderHole. They are all very nice knives, designed for everyday use, and will no doubt make you a very proud owner.

God luck and God bless.

KATN,

Wade

four designs use a spyderhole style opening system (actualy an oval hole)
the CQC-10 is the only one that fits the origional poster's requirements, the other three are the Combat Karambit Folder, the Super Karambit and the CQC-7 Karambit. although I suppose the CQC-7 karambit might be worth a look.

The miniskirmish is a great knife, I love mine. My personal fav everyday knife is the benchmade 710 but it doesnt have the spydie hole=P
