Hey guys...

I am a knife user. I have recently gotten into carrying small fixed blades. I have gotten into the ESEE line and edc an Izula 2. I like it and its a great knife but I want to try something different.

I have my eye on a Bark River Mini-Fox River. It is offered in either 3V or S35VN. Here is where I need the help!

While I would love any feedback on the Mini-Fox River, I really need to figure out what the difference between the 2 steels is.

I know that the 3V is not stainless but is relativly stain resistant?

I have read countless threads about each steel, but I am still confused.

Can anyone put in a more "laymans terms" the pros and cons of each?

This would be an EDC knife, I maintain my blades on a Sharpmaker and a leather strop.

ANY feedback or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Drew

3v is a harder steel that dosent chip as easy and is very good for chopping but is harder to shapren. S35VN is a softer steel that will chip more easy it is good for slicing and is very easy to sharpen. even though the its a softer steel dosnt chip easy but it will chip more easly than 3v. I would take the 3v for one it keeps an edge longer,if an idiot gets a hold of it and trys to cut something ridicoulus it wont chip as easy, and if you ever get in a situation were you need to chop it will be more useful hope this helps welcome to BF

Thanks for the reply! I just noticed that I joined in 2006 and this was my first post!

Talk about a lurker...

Any other feedback would be greatly appreciated. I am not that great of a sharpener yet so I am somewhat concerned about being able to keep 3v sharp. On a convex grind like on the Bark River knives is this difficult? I have never had a convex grind knife before so this will all be new.

If you have other suggestions on knives I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks!

It shouldnt be to hard to maintain with the convex on it the convex makes it easier to sharpen and it makes it super sharp as long as you strop it you should be just fine btw Most people or all people on this fourm love the convex it just makes it so sharp
