Im not in any way a knife builder at least not yet. My son has a mobile knife sharpening business and after working with his belt grinders I had to have one. Im a fabricator of sorts been in the automotive business longer than i should. Im kind of a part time machinist upholsterer seamstress cabinet builder fabricator.

I was in Dallas in June a few miles from Reeder Grinders stopped in and they spent a lot of time with me. Came home looked at options thought about building my own machine but im at a point or place in life where buying there machine wouldnt take any food from my childrens mouths so to say. Built my own adjustable height bench for it. And have been grinding aluminum on it enough to know this machine can flat do the job.

Im now at the belt ordering phase. And really could use some input on belts, like the thousands of videos out there have not been enough input but I think im even more confused now that I have watched a number of them.

A lot of my fabrication work is thick aluminum

My next project is some 1/2” steel the bulk of which is fitment then welding so a fairly coarse grind is ok but theres quite a bit of it.

And i do a fair amount of woodworking.

Oh and dont forget some of the aluminum work I do is tube steel which seems to respond better to scotchbright type belts.

My son will most likely will start making knives before long as well.

so my belt needs span a lot of materials and for different purposes

Ive been looking at videos and options for belts. I will probably go through enough belts to buy larger lots than just a couple belts. The combat abrasive kit seems to be the best bang for the buck. But I wonder if throwing $1000 or more at belts in a kit is the right choice should I think more about what I really need v a kit with a lot of stuff I may not use. You could probably say im not to concerned about the money I spend on belts more often than not time is my biggest hurdle so wasting that on inefficient ( the wrong belt) or worn out belts is a bigger loss to me than the right belt. I think I will do more coarse grinding than finish work but I am pretty sure my son and I will soon attempt to build a few knives and some of the fabrication work I will do some finish grade work as well.

Thanks for letting me join and for any input you guys have for me.
