Hello. First time poster, so go easy on me. I just picked up my first Spyderco, a PM2. What a great knife. Its the black handle, satin blade. I added a deep carry clip. Here is where I need opinions, etc...

1. Was thinking about a back spacer to add. Any recommendations on where to get?
2. How hard is it to install. Can I send the knife somewhere to get installed? Recommendations?

Thanks to all. Have a great day.

I have 3 PM2's and will NOT put a backspacer on them. I like the flow through design. It makes it so easy to keep clean. Plus, I like the look of the open pillar construction. If you're set on a backspacer, there's a guy on Facebook who makes backspacers that snap in place. That way you can try it out and see if you like it. If not, pop it out. No disassembly required. His name is Jared C.......... Not sure of his last name, but search for him on the Spyderco pages, you'll find him.

The lanyard tube can be super tight and a real PITA to get back in... just a heads up.
I concur that its a lot easier to clean without the backspacer.

I appreciate the replies so far. I am not dead set on getting one. I have a couple Kershaw knives that do have them and I like the look. Maybe the open back style will grow on me??? I just got the knife and Im not making any quick decisions.

Question to sharkattack: 3 PM2? Collector or just your favorite knife? Just wondering.

I didnt like the pm2 much, I found the tip very fragile and broke two of them which says alot as Its the only spyderco which has broke on me out of the fifty or so knives I have owned by them. Not a lot of the tip but maybe the first 1/8th of the tip. I also dont like how large the handle is to the blade, But action on the knife is great and its cheap for what your getting. When that knife came out several years ago it was unheard of to get that quality knife and materials for its price. I think the market has caught up at this point and offers lots of great options in a similar price range.
As for adding a backspacer, just leave it as it is if you get one.

I have the: black/black S30V (because it looks cool and I might get some nice copper or brass scales for it someday), tan scaled S35VN (because I like how the tan blends in with my work pants and cargo shorts), and a blurple S110V (because I like how the blurple scales look).

Yes, they are all different steels, but to tell you the God's honest truth, I can't tell them apart (steel-wise). I just like the different looks.

I actually like the larger handle. It's very comfortable in my hands. I typically wear size Medium or Large gloves. But to each his/her own.

Agreed.

I had a hard time completing a one month challenge (carry only one knife everyday as the main work knife) even with knives I modded to my liking. Some how with this current knife, a Para 2 S110V, it has been in my pocket for at least two months now solid.

Speaks for its self. And I'm not a huge fan of S110V. But the Para 2 . . . oh yah baby.

PS: I don't want a deep carry clip and i don't want a back spacer. Not saying they are not desirable but for me . . . not.

I almost went down the rabbit hole by responding to the series of posts by other people.

If you want to add a backspacer, go for it...you might like it, you might not; but you'll never know until you try it for yourself. You can always take it off if you don't like it.
Be advised - the PM2 can present some issues with disassembly, reassembly, and "tuning"... with disassembly causing the most problems. Spyderco was using red loctite on the pivot and body screws; so they're easy to strip if one makes a mistake. (I recently stripped one, and I've disassembled maybe a dozen of them.) Also, as mentioned above, getting the lanyard tube out can be difficult.
Sounds like that snap in backspacer might be an interesting option. I made the decision to put a backspacer in one of mine; but have already decided to go in a different direction with it (I won't have the spacer for another month or so). When it arrives, I'll probably stick it in another one to see if I like it.

Steve, (Boomer52) makes Backspacers for the PM2 with a hook on them that require no removal of the lanyard tube, just remove the two rear standoff screws and slide in. He's on here somewhere but I believe he might still be on vacation. Give him a shout. Hope this helps!

Agreed.

I agree with you 100%. I also agree with you on not wanting a deep carry clip on the PM2. I like to have a little bit of the knife handle sticking out, it's how I've gotten used to and like to pull my knives from my pockets.

After some deliberation, think I'm going to leave things as they are. I really really like my pm2. So much that I picked up a camo one from the exchange. Spyderco #2. Will use that one when I work on wife's family hog/beef/crop farm.

Now I need to learn how to sharpen or find someone to sharpen my knives!

I'd always suggest to sharpen your own knives. It's something most knife owners learn to do(something I think all should eventually learn). It doesn't take a whole lot of effort to learn the basics, but the payoff is huge.

Also, as mentioned above, getting the lanyard tube out can be difficult.
I've never disassembled either of my Para2s and probably never will I just clean them out (very rarely) wash, blow out, then lube pivot with no disassembly. After all I'm not taking apart all my many riveted together slippys.

However I do a lot of this kind of work on other stuff.
To get the spacer to be easier to remove it is probably useful to put the knife in the refrigerator and chill the aluminum spacer, it will shrink minutely and can then be more easily slid out. Doesn't take much.

One of my PM2's that I bought here already had a spacer in it so I opted to leave it in. Honestly it has not been something that I notice at all. You money is better spent on new scales for it. By doing that you are making it your own. A suggestion is that you let the person that made the scales apply them. Dealing with the red Loctite is to say the least a big pain. Heating it up with a hair dryer does not work well. Best way is with a heat gun.
