Hello all,

I'm a newbie to the Knife forums but have always carried a knife. My motto is "Every man should carry a kinfe", when I was younger I was in commercial fishing and the captain of my boat taught me to always carry, "Son, out here a knife may save your life someday". I am in construction now and when my guys come to me looking to borrow mine I scold them and give them a hard time.

Although I have always carried and had several knives I have never really delved into them as many of you afficionatoes have. My sharpening tools are a Hunter Honer with carbon rods that form an X and one of those little orange deals made by Smiths with the carbon on one side and the ceramic on the other, I got it at WallyWord for less than three bucks.

OK OK, stop all the screaming and laughing! I know some of you will want to find me and slap my hand and school me on this issue.

This is why I am here.

What is a good sharpening system thats not gonna break the bank? Fifty- seventyfive bucks.

My current in use knives right now are K-Bar fixed blade and a little Smith & Wesson ExtremeOps clip inside the pocket. I just ordered a S&W ExtremeOps CK42BS just the other night. I know you guys are probably laughing at the S&W knives too but I bought the little clip knife at Big5 for 12 bucks and it has served me well for many months now and seems to hold the edge well. I like the look of the CK42BS so for 29.00 I thought I'd give it a try. I have'nt yet gotten the knife fever to the point of spending 2-3 hundred bucks.

I'm also a gadget dork for flashlights, radios(AM/FM,shortwave, SSB,HAM, CB,GMRS) watches etc... Anyone else like that out there?

Regards, Metro

Get a Spydero Sharpmaker. It is the best sharpener for the money hands down.
I own a $400.00 Edge Pro Professional model sharpener, but find myself using the $50.00 Sharpmaker most of the time...it's that good.

Yeah I just saw some discussions on that in the sharpening and care forum. Should I delete this and move it to that forum? I don't want to upset the mods here, I think I excitedly posted too quick before looking around here.

Thanks, Metro

You can't delete the thread. Just wait for a mod to move it. Welcome to Bladeforums, anyway! :)

Get a Sharpmaker. It will handle routine maintenance on your knives and it comes with a video (DVD now, I guess) and a pamphlet to show you how to use it.

It will also help you understand how "sharpening" actually works. Here's a website about sharpening: Sharpening Made Easy

Here's some basic knife information: Blade Geometry FAQ

First, STOP USING the carbide thing (not carbon) It'll rip apart the edge. Now learn to free hand on a $12 Norton India in Coarse/Fine (orange and brown) or a sharpmaker

Welcome to the group.
I don't have one yet, but the concesus does seem to be that for a easy to use rod sharpening system, the Spyderco Sharpmaker is tops. I have not heard much about the CRKT Slide System.

I have exactly the same two set ups. I use the Edge Pro to set up the knife the way I really want it; then the Sharpmaker on routine touch ups thereafter. BTW, it is not necessary to buy the Edge Pro Professional model as the more affordable Edge Pro Apex will do everything its "big brother" will do except scissors.

If the knives you reference have gotten dull and you have never reprofiled them, then the Sharpmaker is going to be a hard row to hoe. Its medium stones (the darker colored rods) just aren't coarse enough to remove much metal.
