Newbie here - Story of my first spydercos

Hello,

I'm a newbie here, and not really looking to start collecting. My leatherman doesn't really do the job, so I decided to grab a pocketknife. Doing the reading, I settled on a spyderco.

First, I decided I wanted something small, but not too small. I had settled on a Delica, but then I looked at the Salt I, which is basically a delica, but rust-free. This sounded great to me, since I'd love to use the knife in the kitchen. So I bid on and won a Salt from a high-feedback eBay seller, ozark_sports. This was on May 4th, and starting a week ago, I began exchanging emails with the seller. Or, well, trying to.

Three days in, I started getting rude responses, ending with a complaint that he was going to have to file for insurance soemthing with the USPS. I sent a followup asking what this meant for me / my money / my knife. This was on thursday. If I don't hear from him tomorrow (giving very generous allowance for vacation time), I'm filing for a chargeback with paypal. Any thoughts for what I should / shouldn't do?

After waiting for a month, I said screw it, and purchased a Native at walmart today. It's pretty impressive, but I don't have a basis of comparison beyond my leatherman squirt and a few swiss army knives.

So, what kind of things do you use knives of this sort for in your day to day lives? What advice do you have to offer re: the eBay seller? And any suggestions for another knife, should I decide I want something smaller?

Thanks,
-Ross

Hi Rosta,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum. As you are new, you should know that questions regarding dealing with problem sellers and courses of action should be asked on a forum called "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," in the Exchange section of this website:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=699

All talk about your new Native and requests for suggestions are appropriate (and most welcome) for this forum. I'll leave your original post here, but please open an appropriate thread with your ebay and paypal questions in "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."

Thanks.

Hi r0sta,
Welcome to the forum.
For a smaller knife than the native there are quite a few spydies.
I like the calypso Jr and kopa. The Jr will have more models being produced in the near future (or you have to look for some of the older ones). The kopa is more $$ but well built and NKP friendly.
Enjoy your stay here.

r0sta, I've had a similar experience with Ozark Sports and will never attempt to buy from them again. Not only did I not get the knife a month after they claimed to ship it, they didn't reply to a single email. I had to dispute it through Paypal to get my money back. The amount of positive feedback they have is amazing, since the only way my experience would have been worse is if they threatened me with negative feedback.

You made a good choice with the Native. I carried one for a while, but a few small factors convinced me switch to a Delica 4. Regardless, you can't go wrong with the Native.

Just get your stuff at New Graham..
Really, all of the FRN spydies rock, you just gotta pick one you like
