Newbie here: Tell me something about this knife

I actually found this knife back when I wasn't a knife knut.

Now that I am, I dug this knife out of the trunk of my car and am seeing it in a different light. The first thing I noticed is that the blade is embarrassingly dull. But my Crock stic is working on it.

I wanted your expert opinion on this knife.

It's a Rigid brand. Blade says RG-23 surgical steel, JAPAN.

Good knife for a beginner knife knut?

Also wanted to ask, is there anyway to polish or otherwise buff out this knife. I'd like to clean it up the best I can. It's got some marks on it.

Hey Gary. That knife is a good knife for a non-knife knut. Surgical stainless steel is just a marketing term, so never buy a knife because it says this. The blade shape looks kinda neat and it has a clip too, so that is cool. I sharpened up a knife similar to that one last week-end for a guy. He paid $30 Canadian for it, so it had no wonder steel or anything like that, but he just uses it for cutting tape to open t.v. boxes and the like si it is fine for him.

I imagine it will take you a bit to sharpen your knife, and it will dull relatively quickly, but as long as you are enjoying it, enjoy it!!!

It really is a good-looking little utility knife, with classic design elements -- and as Crayola indicated, nothing much for steel. Which means it's a great knife to use to learn how to sharpen ... you wouldn't want to go out and spend $150 just to ruin the edge or scratch up the flats of the blade, right? Nothing you do to the Rigid will lower its dollar value!

But it will make a great "beater". It's a knife you can take places and use for things that are too rough for a better or more expensive knife, until you have more experience in using and maintaining them.

Materials -- steels -- are hard to learn. So many companies use proprietary steels or just their own terminology that you can't be sure what is really in them. Always ask here! I'm amazed at how many times someone will know what's in the most exotic or obscure steel.

Did some research, found out my knife is made out of 420 j2 stainless.

Sells for about $36.
