Hello all. I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but I just found the site and wanted to join. I have always enjoyed making things or working on stuff and it just seems natural that I'd want to make my own knives too. I enjoy working with my hands and I think I can do this well too. My favorite knife (that I unfortunately no longer have :(... ) is a KaBar that I got from a Navy SEAL while I was in the USN. It was a great knife with a razor-sharp blade and the leather grip. It was parkerized and had a diver's hard sheath. I would love to one day make another one identical to it (minus the stamping, of course), but for now I know I have a lot to learn. I plan to buy a few tools very soon as well as a "cheap" toaster over for my HT sessions and if anyone could give me some pointers about what tools are the easiest/best to have and use, I sure would appreciate it. I look forward to hearing from y'all and thanks in advance!

G'day and welcome to the forums. It's a pretty friendly place.
If you're looking to make some knives you should head over to the shop talk area and take a look at the stickies. There are also a lot of threads full of great info and I have never seen people unwilling to help out with guidance, opinions or advice.
Enjoy!

Welcome to the forums. You've come to the right place. Lots of knowledge and experience here.

Thanks for the head's-up as to where to go. I was looking all over and there is definitely a lot of information! I'm looking forward to learning as much as possible about how to properly prepare and make a blade. I'm mostly clueless as to what steel would make a good blade and am finding out that a kitchen knife blade is not equal to a combat blade as far as metallurgy goes. I have a lot to learn and hope to get a grip on what the best steel to use for a given application will be. I think that's the best place for me to start learning. I doubt I'll get into forging my own steel but I think it is very interesting, especially the Damascus types. I imagine that I'll stick to trying to find cheap sources of blade material for a while as I learn to HT, quench, and temper my steel. I know almost NOTHING about the stainless variety and working with it so that will be an area I hope to learn about later. Thanks and glad to be here!
