This is my first post though I have read much info here and thought I was knowledgeable enough to take apart and reassemble a RAT-1 knife.

Well, the first part (dis-assembly) went fine. It is the putting back together (properly) that has me bamboozled.

When I reassemble the knife with the 3 Teflon washers and two bronze washers I have the following two problems:

1. The closed blade wants to rub against the metal liner that is on the opposite side from the lock and not sit in the middle of is slot in its closed position.

2. Tightening and loosening the handle torx screws nearest the blade have an effect on the grips on how tight the blade is and whether it deploys easily or not, as does the pivot screws as they are supposed to do.

When I reassemble the knife I place 1 Teflon washer over the pivot pin on the liner lock side, then 1 bronze washer, then 1 Teflon washer then insert the blade on the pin. On the opposite side of the blade, away from the liner lock, I place 1 Teflon washer next to the blade on the pivot pin then the bronze washer then the metal liner.

After that I line all the holes up and attach the handles on both sides first, then the pivot pin screws.

I have tried moving the extra Teflon washer from one side to the other, tightening the pivot pin screws BEFORE putting on the handles and still no joy.

I am assuming that at least two of the Teflon washers go next to the blade, one on each side.

Thanks for your ideas and thoughts and any help you can give me.

Just tighten or loosen the screws until the blade is centered. Loosen the pivot screw until just right.

Thanks for the reply. Alas, loosening and tightening the handle screws and or the pivot pins on any side does not align and center the blade in its slot near the point.

The problem appears to be that the liner lock is pushing the blade over toward the opposite liner. And I distinctly remember that prior to dis-assembly the blade was centered in its channel.

Unfolded, there is no side-to-side motion of the blade and yet when closed it is being pushed to the other side by the liner lock.

Color me stumped, and thankful for any advice I can get.

That's odd. maybe try experimenting with using one less washer on the side opposite of the lockbar. Did you adjust the screw tightness on both sides of the handle?

I tried shuffling the nylon/Teflon washers and tightening the pivot screws more. One or both of those actions did the trick.

You 'da man;)

Thanks again

I just picked up my Rat 1 today and I can see I'll have to take it apart to properly get the paint off the blade.
Plus I want to shift the pocket clip to another position.
The tools....are they readily available at places like Lowes, etc??
This thread may come in handy when I do the reassembly....so thanks!!

Get some paint remover, preferably the gel type, and spread it over the blade. You could leave the knife assembled but wrap the front of the handle with duct tape so it's less mess. Let the remover do its job and you should be good to go.

I stayed with the Dremel, it worked out good.....I like it mo betta now:thumbup:
