Hello all, I just signed up recently and I really enjoy the forum and this is my first post. I'm am pretty new to the knife world although I have been using folders most of my life off an on.

I am a bowhunter who uses a Buck knife Tempest 295 (Cabelas Edition with some red wood on the handle) which I received as a present from my best man at my wedding. I really like it and it has a lot of sentimental value obviously.

I also own a SOG multitool (Powerlock S62 I think) that I keep in my truck and always seem to find a use for. I had an old Leatherman that my uncle gave me that I loved and used but eventually lost somehow.

I have a good friend/hunting buddy that has a b-day coming up and I want to get him a new folder for EDC. Currently uses a Schrade folder that he got for free, it definitely isnt one of the best in the Schrade line but it gets the job done. He actually does carry it and use it everyday unlike me who doesnt actually carry a knife all the time. It appears to be about the same size as my Buck knife with approx a 3" blade.

Anyway, I am looking for a nice knife to give him as a gift and I am not looking to spend more than $50 since it is an everyday use knife that will take a lot of abuse.

What are your suggestions? I was looking at the Kershaw Leek the other day and liked it but not sure what they cost.

Let me know your thoughts!!

Spyderco Delica 4 is my vote. I gave one to my little brother and he loves it.

Thanks for the recommendation! When I look at Spyderco's I always notice how wide the knife is when folded up due to the big hole. Seems like it might be uncomfortable at times in a pocket.

Any comments?

One of the Kershaw Leek family should fit your requirements. Welcome aboard!

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Spydercos tend to be very comfortable pocket carry. They may seem wide but they are very thin. They also hold up under heavy use.

The Kershaw Leek is a great knife but the blade tip is more delicate than the Delica's. Kershaw Storm and JunkYard Dog are very strong framelocks.

I vote for a Kershaw Leek or Mini-Cyclone.
I got my Leek for $40. Cyclone's are a bit more.

I have alot of knives and the one that can't stop from
jumping into my pocket everyday is my Leek.

I am also considering the SOG Mini X-Ray vision but it is very pricey. How does it compare technically to the knives mentioned above?

I know that it is all a matter of opinion but many people say that SOG's are designed more for looks than function but is the Kershaw and Spyderco line that much better than SOG's?

I prefer Spyderco and I have always liked Kershaw -- even more now with their current flood of creativity and quality. SOG may fall behind in blade steels, which is not always a deal-breaker, but I've always been happy with their fit & finish.

Still, someone always has to come in first. :) I won't put SOG down, but I will say I tend to recommend Spydies & Kershaws.

Keep in mind that SOG has an impressive variety of models, many new, and older models upgraded in steel and design. You don't find Spyderco or Kershaw offering anything like the SOG Revolvers or their line of multitools.

Maybe I'll buy a Delica 4, Mini X-Ray and a Junkyard Dog and let him pick one...I'll take the leftovers for myself!

Welcome to the forums. Good place to learn about knives.

If your buddy is going to use the knife you give him, I'd suggest going with some thing with a good steel. The WalMart version of the Spyderco Native is a good choice. S30V and about $45 or so. If you want to use a Leek hard (and I think it'd make a good bung hole cutting deer cleaning knife), you might want to wait till Kershaw comes out with the Sandvic steel for the leeks and others. Watch the forums here for information on when they'll be available.
Do some reading here and you'll start to learn about better steels and which models are the better construction.

Sorry for so many questions today but how does my Buck Tempest 295 compare to the Spyderco Delica 4 and the Kershaw Cyclone?

My buddy does really like my knife a lot and I want to make sure that what I get him is on par with my knife.

Thanks!
