I plan on making throwing knives so they dont need to be fancy or polished just respectable looking. i plan on using high carbon steel any thing differnt about using it? at first i plan on not tempering my knives then maybe doing it later as my skill progesses.

Bryce, Welcome to the forums. Stick around. I used to use old chain saw bars for throwing knives. They are free if you ask nice at any saw shop. They are respectable high carbon steel and are already heat-treated for throwers. The problem you will have is trying to cut them with a bandsaw. I used a cutting torch (plasma is better) leaving them oversized and grinding the final shape with a bench grinder. A belt grinder makes them look nicer. I even went so far as sending them out to have them water-cut so they would all be the same. That was not cost effective for a $15 thrower though. I was getting good at throwing until my arm threw out one day. Ouch.

hey bruce your going to love this i found a chainsaw bar in my yard a couple days ago.It just has a bit bit of rust i also found a car spring and got two lawn mower blades from a guy down the street. I own a angle grinder but nothing else in the way of metal tools since i own a grinder what should i buy next?

If you have the angle grinder already, you will need to buy some super thin cut-off discs and the adapter for them. You can also buy the adapters for sanding discs in various grits. Check with the auto body supply store. Becareful or you may get hooked on this hobby and buy a belt grinder.

Oh yeah, one more thing..those thin cutting discs will cut you bad. You should see my scars.

what type of adaptor is needed i cant just put it on and tighten it up ? because I have done that already and seems to work fine i just flip the nut thing so it hits the stuff.
