I've been carrying (and using) a Schrade LB7 for over twenty years. I'm pretty sure I bought it at the base BX while stationed overseas in the mid-80's. I'm wondering if anyone knows what the numbers engraved in the brass mean. They read "AV62683". I'm not sure if it's a serial number, but I'm curious if it provides a clue to the manufacture date.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. This is a fantastic forum!

Thanks,

Pete

Welcome,

Yes it is a serial number, it does give a clue but not much precision on manufacture date, mine was bought in 1978 and serial number is A13097. Serial numbers were not always used and not always included letters.

Other clues are number of pins in the handle (3 or 4) and whether the blade pin on the bolster is steel or brass.

I learned this and a lot more in this forum, you may want to stick around and wait for the experts to drop by, you may also try a search.

Welcome to our forum, Pete!

The numbers on your knife is the serial number. Only reliable way to date these knives is described here, which was posted in a thread a while back. The poster is Debbie Chase, 'unofficial historian' of Schrade:

"The only obvious indicator of LB7's years of manufacture is the number of pins in the cover. The LB7 was first manufactured in 1978 with 4 pins in the winewood cover and 1 pin visible in the bolster. Approximately 1991, this was changed to 3 pins in the winewood cover and 1 pin visible in the bolster. In 1992, the 3 pins in the cover were still used, and the boster pin, although it was still there, was no longer visible."

I hope this helps.

Thanks to both of you, Luis and Phil! My knife has three pins in the cover (2 brass and 1 steel), and one steel pin in the bolster. I guess this means that my recollection of buying the knife in the mid-80's must be fogged by the passage of time (what a drag it is getting old!). Now I just have to try and remember where I was in 1991...

Best regards,

Pete
