Well, i've had my first decent knife (Gerber AR3.00) for about a month now... and i've been looking at other knives.

Today I went to a sporting goods store and played with a Kershaw Whirlwind and liked the assisted opening feature. What other makers have these types of knives? Also, any legal issues with these in Wisconsin (I'm assuming not, since they were selling it)?

Also, i'd like to buy a decent sharpener. I bought a 5 dollar sharpener at Wal-Mart (Only thing they had in stock, i'd dulled the gerber from cutting lots of cardboard @_@), seems to work OK, but i'm sure I can do much better than that.

My suggestion is to go to the "For Sale" forum where you could get a good price (less than $100) for a Benchmade or Sypderco. It may be more than you really want to spend but the enjoyment and satisfaction will outlast your memory of paying that much.

At a minimum for a sharpener is the Lanksy Crock sticks, but once again, a little extra money for the Spyderco 204 SharpMaker is money well spent.

Concerning sharpeners, count me as another vote in favor of spending the money for Spyderco's SharpMaker.

Meyerco also has a few speed assisted models, but I'm not certain how their quality compares to Kershaw. The legality of the Whirlwind in Winsconsin is something I can't answer. Check out this thread in the Knife Law forum for some help so that you can find the answer yourself... that way you're not taking anyone's word for it.

BTW...welcome to bladeforums :)

SOG makes the "Flash" series of assisted opening folders. And for the sharpener...Buy the Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 as previously suggested.

SOG also has an assisted opening knife. I don't reccomend it though. It is called the Flash, it opens fast but Kershaw is just as fast and has a better lock.

Damnit, board ate my reply.

Anyway, i've had my eyes on an Emerson Commander or CQC-7A or a Benchmade 910. Although I doubt it's a good idea for a novice like myself to buy such an expensive knife right away like this (I will in the future though. =p).

For future reference, what stores have the best deals on the aforementioned knives? And which stores sell the left handed Commander (being a lefty sucks)?

Since you liked the Kershaw Whirlwind I would recommend that you look at a couple of other Ken Onion designs that they produce. The Whirlwind is a nice knife, but for a little bit more you can get a similar knife built with significantly better materials.

The next step up is the Kershaw Avalanche. It gets you a 440V blade and a G-10 grip.

The top of the line is the Kershaw Boa. You get a 440V blade, titanium liners, and an anodized aluminum grip. The precision of manufacture on this piece is as good as any production knife on the market. I love the deep recurve blade, the lower guard, and the index trigger.

The Boa offers functionality, flexibility, and great ergonomics in a stylish package.

whatchutalkinboutwillis? the sooner u get urself a good knife like that, then less money u'll have to waste on cheaper folders :) always good to own knives of both sides of the production spectrum :)

if you like the onions then you should save for the boa, it's a beautiful knife, sturdy, well built, and excellent materials. and in regards to a sharpeners the spyderco is simply excellent,

Kershaw made some of their assisted openers in left hand also, but they may be harder to track down. I know I've seen a Mini Random Task in lefty and I presume they did the regular Random Task in lefty also.

Good Luck

My wife has carried a Blackout for three years now without it ever failing to lockup. It's been dropped a couple of times and only opened up once. I picked up a little Chive to take to the office. No complaints with the fit and finish. It's a little small for me, though, so I gave it to her. I like their designs a lot. If I was right handed I might very well own a bunch of 'em. YMMV.
