I'm sure this is an easy question -- can someone recommend a strop? I've got a sweet Scandi grind Krein that I need to touch up, and just in general, this is something that I need moving forward.

No idea what to get or how much it should cost. Hoping for $50 or so... but obviously, I want to get something good that lasts and won't wreck my knife. :)

Thanks!

I strop all of my knives on a piece of thick leftover leather from one of my sheath or holster projects.

I just work in some rotary tool buffing compound on both sides. I don't put a backing on mine unless it's something like an old mouse pad. I like to keep them super flexible so that I can sorta roll them over a counters edge for stropping recurve blades at the correct angle.

Chef Knives To Go has a pretty nice 8x3 kit that uses a steel backing. Comes with 1 micron diamond spray to boot. The kit is under your $50 limit, as well.

Thanks, everyone!

Yes, it does sound like a good DIY project... but I've already got more DIY stuff than I can handle. Hey, I'm going to strop it myself, aren't I? :)

Over and out!

Google "leather Strop" and pick whatever suits your wallet:
USA Made Blade is a member of this forum, he used to ship his Hinderer knives with great little strops, unfortunately I did check the website and didn't find any but you can contact him.

plain leather belt, boot top, leather 110/7OT and L66 sheath (a sheath for a longer fixed blade would also work)... I use those and a inexpensive leather barber's strop off of the big river site.
It don't take a special leather.

Check fleabay for used barber's strops. They're made from horsehide, which is thicker and lasts longer than cowhide and they come with a strip of heavy canvass as well which you can load with stropping compound. I've been using mine for ~25 years

I always enjoy using Flexxx Strop. A few versions are not rigid, and are nice for convex grinds. You can place them on a flat surface to work with a regular bevel. They also come pre-loaded.

I have a flexcut strop I like. I think its around 10$ and comes with compound. Or as others have said, they are pretty easy to make to.

I suggest you buy an inexpensive strop and use the extra $$ for some ~.25 micron diamond grit spray. It adds abrasiveness to the strop and allows it to sharpen as well as de-burr.

What are you planning on using for your stropping medium, are you planning on using green compound or emulsion.

If your going to use green compound just use leather,if your going to use emulsion you can leather as well or balsa wood but I prefer basswood as it is still soft like balsa but more durable for sure.
If your looking for a really fast cutting emulsion look at Gunny Juice on gritomatic,I just sand my basswood to 1K and then apply the emulsion.

If you want to get basswood that is really good quality and priced well go to hobby lobby.
