Newbie Needs Advice! Native or Delica?

I think I have decided to purchase either a Native III or a Delica Gen. 4.

1.) The difference is that the Delica is about 1/4 inch longer right? Anything else? I want to use it for an EDC.

2.) As I am a total knife newbie, this is my first purchase! Am I better off getting a plain edge, a combo edge or a serrated edge? I am leaning towards plain or combo.

3.) Which model would you recommend?

4.)Where is a good place to purchase these? My Walmart does not carry them.

Thank you so much for your opinions!

I got a delica as my first spydie...and i love it!

Easy to sharpen, holds an edge well, fits in the pocket well, is easy to carry, and you can move the clip!

I would just get a straight edge as that's what i've found best for me, so that's really nall i can recommend.

Either way you'll be happy, but i'd go for the simple yet effective delica.

Both are excellent knives that will satisfy you, but I'd get a Delica first.

What Vivi and Steve said.

Then start adding to your collection.

cheers

My first Spydie was a Delica 3 - my Native III came later and now I also have a Native, but I also have 4 Delica 4's (we won't go into the other Spydies I have:) ) For me, the FRN/PE/Delica was a natural. The Native line is great, don't get me wrong here, but the Delica whether it be a 3 or 4 or both, just seems to get more pocket time. Either choice would be a good one - just what you like:D

As mentioned - it's just the tip of the iceberg:) I bought the Delica 3 out of curiosity so now, 20+ Spydies later....

There's something very proper about starting with a Delica, not only because of the knife's reputation, but also because it gives one a good benchmark by which to judge further additions to your collection.

It also will prove to you like nothing else that an increase in knife price is almost never commensurate with an increase in performance.

I have a plain edge Native 1 and a Delica 4. I much prefer the the Native. Unfortunately, I traded it toward a Nomad (which I sold). I have to get another native. I really like that knife; it has great steel and the right shape for me. The Native III is too slow and hard opening and I prefer the other clip.

Welcome to the forum cary1952.

You might consider an alternative, the Buck/Tarani/Strider 882. On sale (amoung many other clearance sale items) from Buck @ $40 delivered (UPS).

Fully lined (liner-lock) textured FRN handle (with lanyard hole), tip down carry with movable clip for lefties. ATS-34 stainless steel combination blade with BOS heat treat. The blade has a nice choil for better blade control. 8.25 inch overall. 3.5 inch blade. Dull finish on the blade and clip keeps your marshmallow stick cutting covert.

I bot 2, son 2 and sis 3.

Apparently, the collaboration between Strider and Buck has ended. So this model is kaput after existing stock runs out. http://www.buckknives.com/catalog/detail/371/261

Well put. The only reason I am writing this second sentence is so there will be a minimum number of characters to qualify for a postable message. ;)

oregon, great deal on the SBT. Just ordered one myself after seeing your link. Thanks for sharing.

stevekt,

Dream come true pricing on a robust knife designed by legends and built by skilled craftsmen. I ordered 2, my son ordered 2 and even my sister ordered 2.

The first one I ordered online arrived 3 days later in the hands of a smiling UPS driver. Even the $40 Spyderco Native requires you to get up off your backside and drive to WM & back.

Best,

You're in luck! There is no bad choice here.

Personally, though I'm partial to the Native. The choil tips the scales for me.
