All,

Should I freak out about the points of my blades hitting the cordura or leather when I put them back in the sheath? What about the Kydex like on the Entrek Commando? If a sheath is pinned in the middle at the bottom by a rivet -do I worry about blunting the tip? I appreciate the the help.

i would not worry too much about the tip hitting leather or anything soft. if anything i would worry about cutting the sheath.

i had a sheath for a fillet knire i had with rivets along the sewn edge and i removed them after seeing dull spots in the blade from hitting the rivets. the maker put the rivet on the inside of the stitching which was stupid on their part and there was no welt.

Look at how a katana is put into its sheath and take inspiration from that and you will not have problems with it.
You basically use the unsharpened backside of the blade as a guide into the sheath. Obviously, it won't work on double-edges.

With the knife all the way in the sheath, mark its position with a pencil or piece of tape, then set it next to the sheath to see how far in its going. Another way to find out what's going on is to mark the edge with a Sharpie and sheath an unsheathe it a few times - you'd be surprised how much contact it may be making. A poorly fit sheath is a menace and WILL dull the blade where it makes repeated contact. Not sure I'd worry much about the tip though.

A friend of mine gave me a couple of Gerber fillet knives a while back, of which he had identical copies. They came with hard-molded plastic sheaths. Talk about poorly fitted; the sheaths have a seam deep down inside, near the tip. If not careful, the very thin tip of the blade will run into & catch that hard seam when inserting the blade. One of his knives ended up not just with a dull tip, but a bent one.

Thanks all for the advice, I get a little neurotic about the point of my blade. On a workhorse I really don't mind so much , but for a knife that sits in my collection or something intended for self defense, I get a little freaked. I'll definetely use the spine of the blades on my single edges and mark to find exactly how much room I have on my sheaths. RichardJ--I'll check out the vids and PM you when I'm getting ready to resharpen some of my stuff.

Much appreciated---Knucklehead
