I'm looking for some advice for knives/sheaths everything honestly. I know little about them and am looking to get a few different ones for self defense. I know how to use them but not what a good knife or sheathe, I just get sturdy medium weight knives whenever I find them. Any advice?

I already know that I would like a throwing knife set with a sheath for easy reach, as that is what I'm most comfortable with. I'm thinking maybe a knife to go on a long chain on my neck and one for the outside of my jeans on my calf or thigh and possibly one on my boot. I'm a female in Florida if that changes your advice any.

Well theirs so much out their ...you can start by looking up neck knife and boot knife reviews...theirs a lot of videos out their !!! That should keep ya busy for awhile !!! Welcome to BladeForums...I haven't been around that long but you'll learn a lot, that's for sure.

Id just like to say, and dont take this the wrong way. But you probably do not know how to use a knife for self defense, nor do you want to.

Sure we all would use a knife as an absolute last resort tool if the situation warranted it, but to think you can adequetly defend yourself with a blade in a life or death situation, youre thinking of the movies, not real life. You will be cut, and generally speaking, you will die.

That said, learn what you need in a knife, and what you expect of it, then find the questions you want answers too.

remember, Theres no such thing as a knife fight, there is only knife combat.

+1

Carry a gun for self defense, not a knife.

Knife=tool
Gun=weapon

If someone threw a knife at me, I'd shoot some lead right back at them...Just sayin'

I would argue that both a knife, and a gun are a tool.

The objects themseves are always tools. Its a human being with concious thoughts that turns an object into a weapon.

Even so, a knife could be a weapon. But without EXTENSIVE training, you dont want to wield a blade for combat.Even with training, you STILL dont want to.

I get your point though. Pick the right tool, for the right job.

Knives/blades were invented by man to cut things, be it meat, hair, bush, etc. It is a tool until it need to be used as a weapon.

Guns were invented by man to fight man and hold no other purpose than self defense, hunting with a gun was a secondary thought of that invention.

However, we may agree to disagree.

If you must use a knife for defense, get the meanest looking mofo you can find. I think the Spyderco Civilian qualifies.

IF you're trained in knife fighting then look at some of Cold Steel's offering. Training as in legit knife fighting training with years of experience, not just a 15 mins youtube session on how to thrust or slash.

Definitely look at Cold Steel since they seem to offer everything you're asking.

Don't buy a knife exclusively for self-defense, because it's just not practical. There are numerous posts on this forum and others discussing knives carried by military and law enforcement personnel, and the recurring theme is that the number of such folks carrying a dedicated "fighting" knife is minimal; even the big fixed blade knives are carried for utility purposes with defensive use a distant second. Yes, there are plenty of knives designed with combat in mind, but in reality, a soldier wearing a heavy load-bearing rig or even a LEO in full tactical gear isn't likely to dedicate much carrying capacity to a big knife if it isn't useful in all sorts of roles. Those sorts of knives are far less useful for civilian defensive use because, as I said, it's just not practical. Sure, if you're out in the wilderness and need a big knife for camping, it might be worth the weight, but then you're probably wanting a machete. If you just want an all-purpose fixed blade that happens to have the whole tactical/combat appearance while still being durable and suitable for multiple tasks, well, there are plenty to choose from.

A lot of "outdoorsy" people carry traditionally military-themed knives and are quite happy with them in a variety of roles, but most folks prefer a folding knife suitable for EDC use that could also serve as an emergency backup to a handgun in a defensive situation. There are countless posts about EDC knives here on the forum.
