The good and the bad. I'm a newbie here (the bad), but I've decided that Spyderco products are for me(the good). Any info on protos or early run variations of the following models will be greatly appreciated and help me get my collecting off on the right foot. Thank you and happy hunting for those rare spydies.

I'm interested in identifing all variations particularly earlier ones and open to collection suggestions.

I don't have much in the way of the history of the Spydies in question;
I would suggest obtaining a copy of
"The Spyderco Story". Forumite glasshartt can get you one for $45
plus USPS shipping, E-mail her at :

GlassHartt@aol.com ( Linda Goggin;))

or, if $$ is a problem,you can e-mail Sal (Glesser) at :

sglesser@spyderco.com

Either one of these are EXCELLENT sources ; thing is Sal is a bit busy these days, so, if you have the $$
go for the book (it has ALL the Spydie type(s) proto-type(s),etc.);)

Hi Swoosh. Welcome to the Spyderco forum. Spyderco has a rich history for its short time as a company. (Good & bad, sometimes even ugly - eg; Civilian)

I'm sure you'll be able to glean much valuable information from the visitors here. Spyderco seems to attract a more unusual type of customer. We, at Spyderco, like to think that our customers just look deeper and care more about performance and quality of the product and the integrity of the company. Many here are not afraid to discuss the "tough questions".

We hope enjoy your time here.

There was a few variation.
In Chronological order:
Military in ATS34 and engraving
Military in ATS34 and laser etching
Military in CPM440V and laser etching.
I think the earlier ATS34 have a slight difference in the clip than the ones now, and there's some serrations on the intergrated choil, which the latest rendition of the Military does not.
That's all I know and I'm not very accurate.

Sal, the Civilian is ugly? Well, maybe the Civie I keep clipped to the pocket behind my portable radio is getting an ugly-looking clip where it rubs the radio holder. But, those are honorable scars, not ugly. :)

Sal - UGLY? The Civilian? Here we
go again ( like the "home"
forum thread :"UGLY")

Spydies ( or ANY MAKE KNIFE, EXCEPT
CHICOM "rip offs") are works of ART!
I look at my SE Viele or Shabaria,
the micarta, the sensual lines, THAT
HOLE! Sal, A.G.Russell ( who(m) I've done business with in the "past") called your knives "the ugliest in the business". He NO LONGER HAS MINE! You deserve a f*ckin' medal for bringing "the common pocketknife";) into the 21st century
in the 20th century ( i.e. clip,hole,serrations ) I hope you weren't offended I offered Our new
forumite your personal e-mail ; I KNOW you put in 20hr days, but your "personal touch" with your customer(s) ( such as that letter of thanks, however brief, to ME with YOUR signature, sets Spyderco apart
from the "rest";)) IMO is EXEMPLERARY!

calyth - You know a HELL of alot
more than THOU.

And that, swoosh, is why they'll take
my Spydie ( C29SBK "Cricket") from me when they pry it from my cold, dead, fingers!

www.spyderco.com ;))

Allen, you and I jumped to the defense of the Civilian at the same time. Great minds think alike! Or maybe we are equally misguided!

I NEVER heard anyone saying that Civie is ugly . IMO it's the most representative and beautiful knife ever made by Spyderco.
What a mean thing to say about such nice and sheeple friendly knife. (OK, sorry I got carried away  but the Civie is everything but ugly.)

The graceful curves, the sleek belly, the [*poke* damn!] sharp tip... combined with the light wieght handle... it feels like a feather when you do drills with it... no weight at all compared to my daggers.

The Civvie and Mat are anything but ugly. Stick a choil and kin-op on there, and you have the ultimate MBC knife. Just can't train H2H with it.

I'm in concurence with you.;)

Re : Your mind, or your Spydie?

ANSWER : BOTH! ;)

Now, it's back to "gawk" at Carlos' pics of the "Spyderhawk" ;)
