Hello all,

Newbie here, and I need to confess that I know basically nothing about knives. My purpose for visiting is to hopefully get some advice on where to find a particular knife. My father in law was in the grocery business from the time he was a teenager until he retired a few years ago. Sometime in the 1950's he was given a Purina folding knife by a visiting Purina salesman and carried it with him every day since. Unfortunately he lost the knife a couple of years ago. I would like to find one to give him as a Christmas gift this year. From the little bit of research that I've done, I think it was made by Kutmaster. But, I do not remember if it was a three blade model or a two blade model. So, I was thinking about buying one of each and letting him choose.

I've been looking at ebay and have even placed a few unsuccessful bids. Would anyone here have any suggestions on where else to look, given the limited amount of time that I have before Christmas? Or, would anyone here have one in their collection that they would be willing to sell?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum. Just let me know if there is a better place.

Thanks for your help.

Dave

Welcome, i read Purina in the title and came in to have a look. Yup! Sounds like a vintage, but if someone here doesnt know more, nobody will. Unfortunately, except for the rare offering on the exchange, im guessing youll just have to pony up the cash on an auction site.

Either 'Bay, or you'll need to search garage sales & swap meets.

I'd recommend you just ponying-up the cash on 'Bay and save yourself the time. This is a gift for your father after all.

The folks over in Traditional Folders might have some other places to look. The Bay is sounding best, right now...

Welcome to BFC! You know how to pluralize "knife", always a good sign.... :D

Agreed, the 'bay is your best hope right now, given the limited time you have.

There's a couple there right now, shouldn't be that big of an outlay. It is for your father and after all, he brought you into this world.... :D

If he doesn't want both, you have the beginnings of the descent into bladeness....

Enjoy the forums.

Looks like eBay is my best bet given the short time frame. Some of the knives I'm seeing there look a little rough, so I'm trying to get in touch with a local knife shop to see if they can do a bit of cleanup after I receive it.

Thanks!

Ahem father in law, so buy him a gift as though he brought you into the world... but keep it on a budget :-P
I did see some choice, choice examples on fleabay starting at 10-20! You just need to do some research and learn how to auction snipe. Meaning do an advanced search for purina knife and check the box for completed auctions. Then babysit the last 10 minutes of an auction but in another window have your high bid limit entered, but not submitted, then send it through in the last 15 seconds before others have a chance to rethink their bid and outbid you by one step.

Now all you need to do is casually bring up the topic of the knife and find out if it was a two or three blade, and the red and white checkered handle. Maybe start out talking about groceries or dogs if either of you have any, then bring up dogfood and casually say hey remember that purina knife you used to have?

Most important rule of bladeforums, post back what happens and pictures of what you get...we like pictures!

Stopped by a local knife shop today to see if they had anything, or, to ask if they could clean one up if I bought it elsewhere. He didn't have any, but as we were talking, another customer overheard us. I described what I was looking for and he said that if I left my name and number he would have one for me by the weekend! I dug a little deeper to make sure we were talking about the same thing, same vintage, etc. Sure enough he said he knew exactly what it was and could get me one that looked like new.

So, hopefully I can report back here by next week to post some pictures if it works out.

Thanks again!
