I stumbled over this forum a while ago and have been lurking. I have also been checking out different pages like balisongxtreme.com, balisong.com and the balisongcollector.com. Nice pages with lots of good information. When I was young I had a balisong but it stopped being fun playing with it when I was able to open the knife with some speed. I couldn´t find any good information on how to do any cool stuff. Finding these interesting pages and this forum is great. Now (about 15 years later) I want to learn how to really use this kind of knife.

I´m going to buy a good balisong so that I can start doing those really cool “full twirl open & close” in time for Christmas (or maybe next summer?). I have decided to get a BM42 because of all good things I have read about it. I am too old to waste my time playing around with balisongs that you have to adjust all the time.

I just have a couple of questions. The price of a BM42 seems to differ a lot. I have seen prices from 110$ to 170$, shipping not included. Many businesses selling this knife are also taking preorders or are informing about delayed shipments. What is that all about? Is Benchmade having trouble catering for an unforeseen demand or is there QC problems? The problem with the pouch has it been taken care of or should I just don´t care and use it for another knife?

If I don´t find a knife under 150$ where can I find a used but in good condition BM42? I am checking the knife exchange here on Bladeforums.com but do any of you forumites know any other places. I read somewhere that ebay is not willing to let people put up balisongs for sale. So that is out of the question too.

Thankful for any help you can provide.

bladeauction.com Usually has some up for grabs.

Doubt is an uncomfortable condition,
but certainty is a ridiculous one.

bladeauction.com is always a good place to start looking, I think they have a few there now for around $150.

edit...

there is a 42AS for $135...pretty good deal

It is not a QC thing, they just can't make them fast enough to keep up with demand. There are places that have them in stock but you'll have to hunt for them. I got mine off of a Yahoo auction for $116 shipped and I've seen other go for that. I have heard of people getting them for $100 but I doubt they'd be in stock for that price.

I don't think they changed the sheath that comes with it but it'll work for a starter, it does still hold the knife. If you wan't something different I'd suggest buying a concealex sheath from Clay, you can search the forums and find lots of information on them.

Good luck in your quest

Thanks for your help. Will be looking around for a good price.

I still find it weird that the people at Benchmade is making polls on their forum on what blades they should offer for the balisong in the future? Why not use the energy for getting out enough knives? Awwgh, enough whining.

The BM 42 has been out almost a year, BM is not behind now in making them, it's just there was (and still is a little bit of) a demand for them since they BM had stopped making balisongs. You should be able to find one that is fairly inexpensive. www.1sks.com has them for around $130 but if you sign up for the Code-3 pricing you can get them a lot cheaper, about $110.

Thanks BalisongMan for the info. Don´t think it will make it through customs if I order from one-stop-knife-shop. I will probably have to order through knifezilla or make it a private deal with some forumite.

Collinz,

Why is knifezilla so special about handling the custom issue? I am also having custom problem and if you have a good example, I might give it a try ..

Best,
Chris.

Chris,

check profiles and email me. I tried mailing you but keep on getting a "failure to deliver" message.

If you keep your eyes open, you can find one here in the for sale forums. I picked up a LNIB 42A for $100 shipped a few months back. It's great!!

Colinz - Got my BM42s from americanoutdoorsports.com $102.00, NIB. Shipped as soon as they recieved the order. If they don't have any, post an ad on the "wanted" forum here. I did, and got several responses very quickly. Good luck! You'll LOVE the 42!!!

I ordered one yesterday from cutleryshoppe.com. It was in stock. They also have the anodised available. It cost me 120.00 shipped. Great service. Their web site was down, so I called them on their toll free number 1-800-231-1272.

Ah, at last.

I recieved my used but in good condition BM42 with a plainedge today. It felt like Christmas came a bit early this year. After doing the usual inspection I went out and bought a roll of tape. When I write this I´ve just finished taping (thanks for the tips on your site Gollnick). I am going to start with the beginner moves right after dinner (balisongxtreme.com). I´m so excited.

All right I lied. I just had to try one or two openings and closings before dinner… Mmm, sure half an hour later I remembered that I had to eat. Great, this is going to be an obsession. If you where wondering why I have the time to write instead of playing with my balisong I can tell you that I´m eating right now. So much to do, so little time, I better use it as effective as possible.

Now I just have to figure out a way to tell my girlfriend about my purchase. Well maybe she will understand. She usually does when I get my crazy ideas.

A short announcment:

It took appr. 90 minutes until I managed to draw first blood, my own of course. Another 15 minutes and I cut another finger. Nothing serious.

Keep at it!!! You'll get it in no time, just get some Neosporin so the cuts heal faster.
