Newbie Question about Loveless style hunters

I love the look of the classic Loveless drop pattern, the micarta scales and all. But one thing that I have never been a particularly big fan of (I don't hate it, it just isn't my cup of tea), is the visible red liner. I think I've found a custom maker that I'm comfortable with, and I'm going to order one or two, but now I'm curious . . . why is the red liner so prevalent? Is it a tradition thing, was it a Loveless touch? Why is it so ubiquitous on this style of knife?

The vulcanized fiber spacers served a purpose beyond just adding color.
Being fibrous, they helped compensate for the expansion/contraction of handle material.....
and yes, phenolics sometimes do that too.....though very slightly.

Interesting, thanks. Is there something that can be used that will still allow for expansion/contraction, yet create a seamless wood to metal fit?

Some of the more advanced adhesives, like Loctite Speedbonder, may help with that......
but it's unlikely that anything will prevent the rupturing of the seal 100% of the time.
