Newbie Question: What is an EDC?

As mentioned above, EDC means every day carry...for some people, an EDC is a knife that is carried all the time and used for utility purposes...for others, an EDC is carried for defensive purposes and almost never used for more mundane tasks.

Thanks guys! What do you guys use your knives for? (I can only think of cutting rope and tearing open cartons)

I use my knives every single day without exception. From opening boxes, cutting tags off of stuff, cutting food, whittlin, opening mail, Etc Etc..

You would be supprised how many times a day a knife could make your life easier.

I usually use mine to peel fruits, and sometimes cut my food.

Only once, in a night, when 3 obvious "bad guys" were approaching to me in a quiet street, I pulled my folder out of the belt pouch with a sound of "slash". Then the 3 guys seem changed mind and passed by, leaving me safe. My folder is a Buck Strider 880SP. It's my EDC. :)

Always carried some sort of pocketknife everyday to be used for cutting fruit, slitting envelopes, cutting string, rope and plastic strapping and always found some cardboard boxes to be opened - hopefully with a new knife inside! :D Only pulled a fixed blade with the intent to kill once in my life. While trapping as a teenager, ran into some wild dogs fighting over one of my muskrat catches. Pulled the knife but opted for a tree near by to sit it out!:) Not much use for a large fixed blade nowadays but I certainly love to collect them!

mail, tape, labels, packing straps, thread, bagels, boxes, whittling, tags, the sealed plastic packaging that everything seems to come in, screws (SAK and Gerber multi-tool), radiator hose, bags, cans, bottles, you name it. I've carried some kind of knife since I was 7 or 8. Welcome to the Forums.

I only use my Micra to cut boxes and tape. I am very amazed when people talk about using their blades everyday. I guess if you worked in a warehouse or did security or something, a EDC would be more useful.

I use my EDC every day. We have a couple of grandkids living with us for a while, and my 3 yr. old granddaughter gets lots of toys, ect., that is encased in plastic. She always brings them to me and says,"Knife, Grandpa, knife! Open,Grandpa!" She is facinated with watching me cut open her packages, and NOBODY opens anything for her except me with my knife. Girl is showing real potential, huh?

I thought that a knife would get little use , but once you carry it you use them for so much ! I feel naked without my edc :)

EDC uses:
cutting loose threads
pruning trees
opening mail
cleaning finger nails
sharpening pencils
cleaning fish and game
whittling
cutting/preparing food

In general, for cutting whatever needs to be cut.
