Bernard, if I am not mistaken (Craig correct me if I am wrong), the steel used in the khukuris is 5160 and the handles are not removable.

Hope this helps,

Harry

Bernard, GH khuks are all forged from truck springs, as far as I know. I don't know what steel that would be, however. Sometimes old, worn out files make excellent stock for khuks, but I don't know if GH carries any khuks made from files or not.

Truck and auto springs are usually 5160,if not they`re the functional equivalent. I make some knives of my own out of car spring stock and it works very well. The steel is VERY tough, takes and holds a great edge and sharpens easily. For choppers it`s darn hard to beat. Marcus

Sorry, but I was out of town for a few days. Indeed, everybody is correct. All of our khukuris are made from truck springs - no railroad tracks, no melted down engine blocks, no files (all things that one finds being turned into khukuris in Nepal). Welcome to the forum!

And BTW, I've never heard of a "removable" handle on a khukuri. Sure, with a bit of work (boiling the handle, sawing off the peened tang), you can get a handle off - but they're not designed to be removed.
