Greetings everyone . This is my first post here . I've recently purchaced a ColdSteel Kobun with a blade made of 420j "subzero quenched" .Is this a decent blade or cheap crap . I'm not yet as knowledgable about steel as most of you seem to be. I only gave $38 nib so I'm not out much if it is junk .

Well it's certainly not one of the 'supersteels' but I wouldn't say its the most inferior either. It won't rust or corrode as rapidly as some other steels (ATS 34, 154 CM, VG 10, ATS 55 etc.)

I would say it's probably an asset in a moist environment where it won't rust too quickly.

Not a great steel but depends what your uses are.

It could workout to be the perfect tool for you or it could work out to be the most inefficient depending on your uses.

Frankly, I suspect the intended role of the Kobun is as a backup -- hence the concealex sheath w/boot clip that comes with the knife. Used as such, a knife in 420 (or just about any sharp steel for that matter) will work just fine.

I too have a Kobun, though it's one of the earlier models made in Japan rather than in Taiwan (which is supposed to mean AUS 8A instead of 420 Sub-Zero quenched). I gave more than $38 for the thing, that's for certain. While the Kobun isn't a superknife, I try to keep things in perspective. For me, it's a backup that's used only for that purpose.
