Newbie questions regarding maintenance

Hello everyone...first post here! I found out about this site over at www.GlockTalk.com.

Anyway, I have a new CRKT Kasper, and just ordered a Spyderco Sharpmaker and a Tuf-Cloth. My question is...how often should I be lubing the pivot bearing, using the tuf-cloth on the blade, etc? I already put a small nick in the blade, so I am going to try my hand at sharpening soon. Doesn't the Tuf-Cloth need to be re-moistened after a while? Anything else I should know?

BTW, the knife is in light duty, nothing extreme. I love this knife, and plan on getting a Benchmade Stryker soon.

Welcome to the forum!

I don't think you'll have to re-wet your Tuff cloth too often. They say pour some tuff-glide to refreshen it, or mineral spirits to re-wet it. As far as how often to apply, well I'll let someone else answer that.

Nate, welcome to the forum. I myself am new here and it's so reasuring to know there is so many other knife nuts.
As to your question, I feel that it's going to be a matter of how much you use it and for what. I wash mine out with warm water and mild soap about once a month or longer if it just sits in my pocket. Hang it out to dry and then apply oil. I wipe the blade down before I put the knife on the shelf almost daily. Some might consider this excessive. Either way you might have to clean and oil your blade more or less often depending on what and how often you use it. You can also find some excellent suggestion for cleaning in past topics.
P.S. Got my Stryker a couple weeks ago and I love it.

So wait....you can wash the whole thing in soap and water? Just some dish soap? Then let it dry, and re-apply lube? I didn't know that...then again, I'm just a newbie

And yeah, I did try and search for maintenance topics, but found none...I may be a newbie here but I have been on UBB's long enough to search before opening my mouth

I was given some Liqui Moly Guntec grease for my knife..anyone else heard of it?

I just wanted to be of some help, there is a topic listed as "Flushing Out Folders With Water" posted by Bronco. I believe this will give you some excellent idea's. I've used molly for my guns and it's great, but when I used it for my knives it was just to thick. Almost to the point of slowing the action down. It's so thick It didn't get in to deep either and it collected dust. I'm not exactly sure what kind of molly your using. I know allot of people including myself who have mixed some other kind of lube to change it's consistency. I think this is what the manufactures are doing when they sell this product in different forms. After reading some topics here I now use Tuf-Glide and it works great.

If you have Tuf-cloth and an applicator of Tuf-Glide, you have everything you need. If you go in the water or are near the beach a lot, Than Marine tuf-cloth may suit you better. If you wear your knife in the pocket and use it for mundane tasks such as cutting open boxes and letters, then once a month washing, wiping and applying a drop or tuf-glide to the pivot will be more than enough.If you sweat a lot, cut a lot of fruit or go near the surf a lot, then wash and coat as needed. Remember, Stainless steel is really stain RESISTENT steel and needs to be treated as such. A blow dryer on low heat is helpful to dry out a knife after washing and before treating. You don't want to seal in the water with Tuf products. 1SKS is as good an outlet as any for these products. I also recommend getting an "eraser" to remove any corrosion that develops before you get to thee treatment stage, especially on bead-blasted of stone washed blades.
As an order of scale, The knives I carry frequently get the treatment once a month. The knives I collect and carry rarely are treated once every 6 months. I sweat a lot, live in a humid climate and don't go to the beach or cut fruit much. Better to err on the consertive side than let corrosion creep in.

Thanks for all the help guys, I did go and look up that post regarding washing knives, glad to see that it can be done. I really hope I can sharpen my blade and fix that nick I put in it, I am pretty mad that within the first two weeks of getting my first knife I messed it up. Luckily it's a tiny nick, and can only be seen in the right light.
