Newbie review of MOD Scorpion vs. Emerson La Griffe

A few months ago I decided I wanted a neck knife for the primary use of handiness, not just SD. After a bit of browsing I was torn between the MOD Scorpion and the Emerson la griffe. Well, like any poor fool I went out and I bought both NIB, and let me tell you, there was a BIG difference. First, both knives looked nice when they came, and they fit OK in the hand. The la griffe was considerably more comfortable. It wasn’t like the MOD dug into my hand, it just seemed like the handle is a bit too short (and I don’t have large hands by any stretch of the imagination). I just always felt like my thumb was going to slip up the back of the spine and get sliced by the serrations (thankfully, that never happened). Fortunately, such a concern was irrelevant for the la griffe thanks to the finger hole and the way that the knife fit in my hand which placed my thumb out of reach of the blade. Second, the sheaths were markedly different as well. The fit of the blade in a sheath which is planned to be worn around the neck either exposed to snags or right next to my wussy little bare skinned belly was a matter of much importance to me. The MOD sheath did NOT offer me any reassurance in the area of retention. Just holding the sheath with the knife it and lightly shaking the sheath produced too much (for my comfort level) rattling, both side to side and vertically. After noticing that, I turned the sheath upside down and shook the rig again trying to (in my best effort) simulate walking running jumping motions (realizing that there would be quite a bit of bouncing/jerking going on if the thing was around my neck on the chain). The blade slid out about 1/8 of an inch within seconds and flopped around even more loosely than before. Same test with the la griffe but there was absolutely NO movement with that rig, the only way I could get the knife out was by putting my finger in the hole and giving it a good yank. Fortunately, the MOD does come with a tek-lok (sp?) and that would be the only way I would ever carry this blade. Finally, the every popular sharpness test. Out of the box the MOD was quite dull, would scratch the surface of a finger nail but would prefer to bend paper than slice it. I worked on the blade for about 30 minutes on my sharpmaker but to no avail ( I did however take the blade to a local shop and the guy there was able to get it quite sharp, but still, such should be the out of the box condition IMHO, at least). Again, were the MOD failed the la griffe excelled, blade is incredible sharp, perhaps the only knife that I have handled who’s out of the box sharpness rivals my SERE. I know that one may think that the blade shape of the la griffe would not lend itself to EDC use but I was pleasantly surprised. I recently returned from a few day camping/fishing trip and the knife was used for all our small tasks and performed far beyond expectation.
So all this to say that I was very impressed with the la griffe, and very disappointed by the scorpion. And I didn’t even cover the SD aspect, I think I leave that to those who have more of a clue than I do (although I would take the la griffe hands down
:D )

A while back my dad and I both picked up new neck knives, me an Emerson LaGriffe, and him an MOD Scorpion. He wanted his for jogging, I wanted mine for an EDC back up piece. Both have been carried for about a year+, both sheaths have held up well, but to make a long story short, my dad intends to pick up a LaGriffe soon.

After playing with them for a while, and running a few drills, the Emerson just works better, at least for us. The MOD is a good knife, but I personally think the handle sucks as a SD piece, perhaps it would be decent for a utility only knife if that way you wish, but that's not how it's really marketed, and it's not really what it looks like.

Diamdave-I bought the la griffe online, 1sks has them for $65 http://www.onestopknifeshop.com/store/emerson.html

Quiet storm- thanks for the tip, I never did too well in English class, but hey, I was a product of Californian public schools so what can I say? You know, like begets like, dumb commie leaders=dumb commie kids (somehow I made it out with my soul, one for two aint bad :D )

thanks for the link, I think I actually stumbled upon that thread before I bought them. I just thought the added back serrations might be what I was looking for, so I tried 'em both.

Great review, anewguy!

Of the two knives, which you find to be a better cutter? The LaGriffe looks like it'd just lock right into your hand.

thombrogan-
thanks for the kind words!

NIB, the la griffe was the better cutter hands down (I actually don’t think that even that phrase says it strong enough). Now that both are sharp, still I would go for the la griffe. There is something about the blade shape that seems to keep the edge into the material.

As far as the knife itself locking into your hand, you are absolutely correct. One of the camp chores that it found itself doing was breaking up ice. You know how when you get a 10lb bag of cubes how sometimes the freeze into a big block. I just altered the grip on the la griffe a bit (so that the point would stick out almost strait, kinda like a push dagger) and gave that mess a few jabs. Worked great! I know that an ice pick, or any hard object would have probably worked but, that is what I had with me. I wouldn’t even think of doing that with the scorpion, as I said before (I think), I always felt like my thumb or pointer were gonna end up one of the edges just when I would unsheathe the knife, let alone stab something that would both get my grip wet, and offer a bit of resistance (i.e. so that the “path of least resistance” for the energy exerted would be for the blade to stop and my hand to continue, even if it was an 1/8 of an inch, my day would be ruined).

I tried a LaGriffe a year or so ago. The LaGriffe is a great design, however, I was not pleased with the thick chisel grind on mine. The knife would not cut well at all, extremely poor performance. It would have taken quite a long time to reprofile the edge so, I simply traded it. Too bad, I really liked the knife except for the poor edge. A regular "V" grind LaGriffe would be great.
