I bought dmt dia-sharp stones. will the techniques used in mr. carters DVD's (as far as I can tell are based around waterstones) work with diamond stones?

Absolutely. In the video (well, the first one - I haven't seen the second one), he even sharpens a knife using a cinderblock and piece of cardboard to show it's not the tools that matter.

Yes and no, Diamond stones will work better if you use edge leading strokes.

thanks for the replies. Work better? in what way? will the edge be better (sharper) or are you saying the stone will simply cut more efficiently?

More of a burr develops when using trailing strokes on a diamond stone.

One more question. Is there anything in Murry's first video that is not covered in the second? Would I be ok just buying the second? I want to buy both but if all the material is covered in the second it doesn't make since to purchase the first.

They both have their appropriate place, I would say. I own both of the DVDs and learned quite a bit from the first one, and focused more on advanced techniques in the second.

Murray Carter prefers using a sharpening medium that is comparable to the hardness of the steel itself. I'm sure the technique he teaches could be used on DMT stones, but the idea that you need something hard to sharpen steel - and therefore diamonds are the best option, isn't necessarily true.
