Hey everyone,
This my first topic post here, as well as my second knife.
The knife is hand made (of course, lol!
). I only used a file to shape the knife, mainly because I don't have a belt grinder. I did heat treat it, but I don't think it was very effective. I did a differential quench in engine oil which was heated (I'm not sure the exact temperature). I think that's why it wasn't as effective. The symbols carved into the handle are Chinese for a friends name (I'm actually giving this to him as a gift). I used a carving set given to me for graduation and then I darkened them with a wood burner. I am making a sheath for it, and hopefully it'll be done by the end of this week ( I need to get it done by then or it'll never get done, I'm heading off to college on Monday).
It's 1095 Steel, 12" total, 7 1/2" blade. I blued the blade because I wanted some extra protection against rust, and I also used brownells water displacing oil. I only happened to have that because I accidentally mistook the displacing oil for the super blue, lol! The handle is made of cherry from a wild cherry tree of my neighbors. He was cutting a path through the woods and the tree was in the way. Since he was only going to use it for fire wood he said I could have it. If you look you'll see that the handle is only partially heartwood. That was a mistake.
You guys will probably notice that the bluing job didn't go so well, lol! I used Brownells super blue, but I'm guessing my mistake was that this is only meant for touching up. Next time I'll try doing a hot blue.
Any and all critiques are welcome, I like to know what I did wrong so please don't shirk the negative comments.
Hopefully these pictures are all viewable. If you can't see them let me know in this thread. You can tell me how I should upload images and I'd appreciate that.
Thanks for looking!
