Hey all - I'm entering into the world of knife making from the similarly possessed/obsessed world of guitar making. My living situation doesn't allow for that scale of a hobby anymore so I needed to downsize. I have some woodworking skills but knife construction is an entirely new beast to me. Here's what I was thinking about doing as an introduction, please give me your feedback, suggestions, criticisms. I appreciate all your help, thanks!
I'm planning on buying one of the vg-10 laminated japanese kitchen blades (with no bolster) from jantz and just putting a handle on it from some curly maple stock I have left from guitars to get a feel for how it all goes together. In my mind it should go like this... The knife has a hidden flat tang so I will have to make my handle (wood and horn maybe) then cut it in half, route out for the tang, then epoxy the tang inside of the handle, clamp and wait til dry. Then after some sanding/sealing I have a very nice high quality kitchen knife. Is this basically right? Please let me know if I am missing any obvious points, I welcome any comments you have. Thanks again, I look forward to your responses,
- Nate
