Hi Guys,
I think I'm a future knife 'enthusiast'. I just wandered over from candlepowerforums. I've had an old Schrade Uncle Henry Stockman and an LB5 'forever'. The LB5 finally broke last night. Although it served me OK, it was always a chore to keep it and the stockman sharp. The stockman is also a pia to get open with greasy hands. I did some quick searching last night. I wanted an edc and I wanted one-hand operation. I saw that Spyderco had a good following and narrowed it down to the Delica or the Endura. I decided the smaller size of the Delica would be best for my needs. Main uses- cutting small rope/string, hose, occasional larger rope, some cardboard, general workshop use. Lighthound had the Endura Wave, regular blade for $44. Seemed cheap, so research out the window, click-send, the Endura Wave is on its on the way. I think I'm still going to want the Delica or something small, but I'm holding off to see how the Endura works out.

So after all that introductory babble the question is: how useful is the
combo blade on something small like the Delica? I'm not seeing an application for such a small run of serrations? What do you guys think about the combo blade? Thanks for any comments or advice. -Nick

It's a matter of personal taste, seriously.

Some people prefer combos, others plain, and others fully serrated. I have one knife combo edge and I won't buy another. I just don't like them.

The best thing is to try :S

From the sounds of what you cut the most a full serration might almost suite you better. My first couple knives were all about the same size as the delica but I found for small-medium knives that a combo edge is more of a PITA than one or the other since for me anyway you dont get enough of either type of blade style.

The big question is do you ever have to make clean/precise cuts with your knife? I find that is the only real drawback to serrated knives is your cuts tend to be a bit rough but it will cut much better on stuff like rope and string and whatnot

I actually bought my E4 waved from lighthound to I love it. Makes a great all around EDC. I also had mine reground by Tom Krien to a full flat super thin edged cutting monster.

I couldn't have said it better.

Plain-edges are all I use these days.

Absolutely, I used to have couple of CE and didn't find them useful in my applications. Today, all my EDCs are PE, but I keep in my car Delica4 SE and probably I will buy more SE in future.

I too believe a plain edge is the most useful, however, when you need to rip through something tough in a hurry, nothing beats Spyderco's serrated blades. I carry a Spyderco Military, fully serrated, in my left front pocket...it's my weak side knife.

The Delica is an outstanding little knife. Since the pocket clips are reversable, you may want to see if you could carry two...one fully serrated and one plain edge...the best of both worlds in my opinion:D Combo blades are okay for general users, but they are limited in many ways.

Lightwait - Welcome aboard. I just joined candlepower forums myself. Have fun.

Well, you guys succeeded in making me spend extra money. Right after I got the Endura wave, I got a Delica plain edge wave AND the Delica fully serrated for the other pocket. Great little knives. I'm glad I went that route, I had an opportunity to play with a short combo blade and it wasn't the answer for me. Maybe in a longer blade, but for the Delica's length, I didn't care for it. Thanks for your suggestions.

I like the cutting power of serrated edge, but they are a pain to sharpen compare to plain edge, especially if you chip a teeth or two.

Now I buy plain edge if possible, much easier to sharpen.

As mentioned above serrated has its uses but personally i prefer plain edge. As for the combo blade you might want to tiptoe over to the exchange and trade it for something you might want. later, ahgar
