I have some plow blades, new in the box from the farm I grew up on. The model # is stamped on the blade. I looked up the manufacturers specs and they are 9260 steel. I also have some smaller Klongsgilde made in Denmark blades but haven't been able to find the steel type yet. I see 9260 is used a lot in longer blades/swords. Is it appropriate for smaller blades as well, and just not commonly used, or is the lower carbon content too low for smaller blades? From what I can piece together it is similar to 5160, with more alloying elements, which is used in regular knives.

It's basically 5160 IIRC.

Should be fine for pretty much any kind of knife.

The silicon content is much higher, 0.2% in 5160 compared to 2% in 9250. Carbon and chromium are about the same.

9260 is a spring steel (like 5160) but has almost double the tensil strength of 5160. Great for prying tools, and swords, but I don't think it can get as hard as some of the more common knife steels.
