Being a yo-yoer myself Gib's vids have got me somewhat interested in bali stuff.

So here are my questions:
1. What would be a good cheap knife to start with? Preferebly one I could blunt at first since a lot of things I do require my hands and I couldn't really do them with lots of cuts on my hands.

2. How would you go about blunting the knife?

3. Anyone know the laws regarding balis in CA, don't want to suddenly get arrested for having it

I guess you could buy a jag. My friend had one adn the pins broke but that is easy enuf to fix. NEVER buy a bear. I had mine for a month and the handle broke. my $.02

also, sometimes u can find a practice balisong on e-bay that has a butterknife blade on it, you might wanna try that.

Forgot to add this in my first post, would taping the blade work - that way i could take it off after i got better and have the fun of playing with a sharp spinning object

Taping the blade with black electrical tape is the usual approach.

You might want to read my comments on the subject by clicking here

The "practice" balisongs are really sold more for knife sparring than for manipulation practice.

You can usually find some decent cheapies for anywhere between $10-$30.I'm not sure where you'd be able to find them in CA,but you might try any knife shop or martial arts store.Even some Army Surplus stores carry them.
I'd go for the cheapie to begin with. The blades aren't all that good, very few will hold an edge for long. This is good in a way though. If you're going to tape the blade,on any decently sharp blade the tape will wear off right on the edge from the edge area slamming into the spine of the handle. On sharp knives, you may have to change the tape often, but on cheaper blades (especially duller ones)you won't have to change tape as often.

Oh,and by the way...last I remember, the balisongs are illegal in CA (as far as carrying them).
Until you find out for sure, keep your balisong at home.If you carry it,make sure you don't do anything stupid.CA cops are kinda strict about the laws (depending upon the area) from what I remember.

I would get a jaguar. I know that james lac and jason lee are into bali too, so maybe you could get a knife from james. He says that they're illegal in CA, so i would just leave it at home. -

The best knife at the best price right now is the Taiwan made knife. There is a pretty good selection as far as blades, colors and a few different styles. I sell them for $12 plus $3 shipping for a total of $15. You can get a China made knife for less, but the material in the handles is softer and the pins tend to round out in the holes fairly fast. For me, it's better to sell someone a China made knife, because they will be back soon to get the Taiwan, and I have two sales. But if I just sell them the Taiwan the first time, I only get one sell out of it. Thanks, JohnR7 www.BalisongKnife.com
