Hi all! First off don't laugh at the name. Asked my kid to help and that's what she came up with. Been collecting knives and swords since I was a kid but new to the hawk world. Got a CS trail hawk yesterday to tinker around with. Question I have is that it had a sticker on the head that read "American Tomahawk Company". Is CS a branch of ATC and is this the ATC that I'm thinking about? Also on the other side of the blade it was stamped Taiwan. Must say it is pritty ruff. Haft is rather ruff feeling although it looks to have some kinda clear coating on it in some spots. Blade is sharper then I expected. Already sanded the haft down and will be staining it today then linseed oil it this week. Will also sand the head down to get rid of that nasty black paint. Must say I'm kinda excited in my new project. I see more in my future.

 Welcome to BF, especially as a new hawker. Here's hoping you find much enjoyment in hawks, and find the information here invaluable, I know I have. Please post a pic, if possible, when you are done with your project. Sounds neat.

Hey thanks. Just found on CS's site that CS hawks are made in Taiwan. Still don't get the "ATC" sticker though.

Don't have a Trail Hawk, but I do train with a Rifleman's Hawk as they're heavy, and approximate the weight of some of my tacticals. The ATC sticker is probably a licensing thing. Someone jump in and correct me if I'm wrong.

yeah i recently started re-working my CS TrailHawk. i tried sanding down the haft (good quality haft, but never "fit" right. on mine the finish seems to go deep, stained with Minwax "Sedona Red" and it never really set. i started wiping it off and the stain left in the deep grain contrasted nicely with the original light finish. so i put my Hudson Bay (Crazy Crow) head on that haft.

i have a decent hickory haft from Crazy Crow (their handles are not generally of good quality) in a Sedona Red and then a paste wax. then i put my CS TrailHawk on after sanding off most of the painted finish, looks real good. i plan on adding some copper tacks and antiqued brass tacks to it soon. fun to customize definately. good luck.

No, the ATC by Prisco is a different company, they have clashed in the past over issues, details can be read on Andy's forum here.

I bought a couple CS trailhawks as starter tomahawks. Gave one to my son. The light weight and thin blade makes throwing and sticking fairly easy once you get the hang of it. I still throw the trailhawk best of my three throwing hawks, but then I'm still a beginner so that doesn't mean I'm especially consistent. I have graduated to double rotation throws but my accuracy stinks. It is fun, I must say. Something my son and I do whenever we are together. I took off all that coating and polished the head a bit, then treated it with gun bluing. I've been through a couple handles already. I wouldn't use it for any heavy chopping but it's easy to keep the edge sharp enough to use like a knife. Welcome to the forums. There's lots of friendly, helpful people here.
regards,

So far I stained the haft in a red oak finish (3 coats) the started oiling it with lemon oil. Can't seem to find linseed oil anywhere in a small size battle or can. Sanded the head down with some Dremel heavy and medium grit abrasive buffs. Then took a scotch brite pad to take out the scratches and shine from the buffs. Gave it a nice uniform matte finish. Just waiting for the desert camo 550 paracord to come in and I should be set. Wish I had a digi cam to take some pics. LOL, looks like I have a new addiction.:D
