Hi,

I have always had a desire to make my own kitchen knife and given the amount of time I have on my hands during Covid 19 lockdown I thought now is a good time to start exploring the possibility.

I have never done any kind of metalwork or anything remotely like this before, so I am starting from the beginning.

From your experience what are some of the things I need to put on my 'to do' list if I am to start to learn how to make my own kitchen knives? I had in mind the idea of working with a steel billet bought online.

What is a good place to start?
Are there good books to read?
What basic tools and equipment do I need?

Regards

Jimnibob

On the shop talk forum page, check out the stickies on the top of the page. There is a newbies/wanna be knife maker page that will get you lined out pretty quick...

There is also a YouTube video page that lots of folks have posted videos of good info sources.

Welcome to one of the best ways to make yourself poor that had ever been invented!!
It's a great hobby!

Walter Sorrell has the best videos in my opinion for the new knife maker. After you get going nick wheeler is the best pro level source. Be sure to read the stickies at the top of the forum so you don't bug everyone with the questions that everyone ask when starting out. Also start reading @Larrin on the knife nerds website to get a better understanding of the metallurgy that you will need. Good luck on your start. It's a awesome hobby.

I have been into knives since I was a kid. This made me interested in working with metal and I have been involved in the welding industry for over 20 years. I finally was able to get into knife making and I have really been enjoying it.

Bob Loveless "How to make knives" is in my opinion the best book ever written on how to make knives.
I used his book to learn how to make knives back in the late 1970's. Back then there weren't CD's, or U-Tube or anything like that. Now there is lots of good information how to make knives.

I'd second that! How to make knives is a great book, and I've seen in on many public libraries!
