Hello, I am a Scoutmaster here in NY and would like to introduce the Tomahawk to the troop... I just received my new Cold Steel TH and thought for the money it would be a great tool for the scouts... Since I am new to the tool can someone please tell me the best way to secure the head to the handle? I have put many an axe head on but I thought there must be a reason the tomahawks come unsecured. Thanks much!

Slide the head down the shaft, pound in place then tighten the little screw that comes with it and thats it. :)

I've found that the screw doesn't work for more than five minutes when throwing, and just gouges up the handle. What I've done with my CS 'hawks is pound the head down the shaft, remove it, sand the places on the shaft where it got tight, pound it down and remove it again, sand the tight spots, lather, rinse repeat until I have a really nice snug fit, and then liberally apply multiple coats of linseed oil over the course of several days.

Some people here also recommend Gorilla Glue; I've never had much luck with it though.

The handle coming off is actually a feature, not a bug; they're less prone to breakage that way.

I just pushed my girlfriends on and tapped it with a rubber hammer- she has never had a problem with it- as you chop it naturally tightens it. I think they would be great for Scouts- each person can individualize theirs. Look at what others have done here to get some ideas.

Man... I wish my Scoutmaster had thought of that. I had to wait til I was almost 30 before I first got my hands on a 'hawk.

When throwing I dont use the screw eather, as it does gouge up the handle.

Thanks very much! I might be overthinking things a bit but I have a inch or so of top handle overhang... Is that better on or off? also The handle looks a little long... (especially for throwing) is there advice on "best length" Thanks again!

the set screw will destry the handle if youre throwing it....on my throwing hawks I make sure the head is where I want it on the handle and then soak it in linseed oil....the wood will swell a little and fit the head tight...I've said it before but you just can't beat a CS Trailhawk.........
