I ordered a few Khuks over the past couple of weeks most will be Christmas presents for my Brother and Brother-In-Law etc...

So, I put a few coats of Tung Oil on the handles after Filing the Butt caps per advice from Yvsa. I took a picture of the small collection I've amassed so far.

18" Sirupati with a Walnut wood(?) handle by Bura
16.5" Villager BGRS with a Tuni wood handle by Bura
17" Villager BGRS with a Satisaal wood handle by Bura
14" BDC with an Evergreen wood handle by Bura
12" Katunje My Special with a Chandan wood handle by Kumar

I'm going to keep one of the BGRS and the BDC. I love the fullers on the BDC and it feels good for a small Khuk.

Question:
So, for the next purchase for my self I'm kind of torn between the Gelbu and the Chitlangi. I'm a real sucker for the fullers on the BDC ;)

Can you guys give me your opinions of the Chitlangi and the Gelbu both in 18" - weight, balance, speed, etc...

Nice little family you have growing there, ALBPM

The differences between a Gelbu and a Chit are nuanced and individual variation in khuks matters most. Pick the one that you like looking at.

AL generally the Chitlangi is lighter than the Gelbu Special and double fullered or Dui Chiarra instead of one fuller, can't recall the name for one fuller right at the moment. :o
Anyway the Chitlangi being lighter is faster and more nimble than the GS and IMO cuts just as deep.
It is more than capable of severeing limbs from an opponent as is the GS.
Generally being lighter the Chitlangi is easier to carry as well. :D

Nice collection. I'm waiting for my 18" GRS. That'll make 5, although 2 of them are KH. Seems like I'm pretty average for fledgling HIKV.

Thats good.

That's a great little gaggle of khuks there:)
I'm waiting on a magical 15" Siru to call out to me as a camp knife. If the weather holds, then i'm going to take a short weekend trip with the Mrs. after Thanksgiving. I have dozens of khuks, but the sirus are starting to speak to me more and more these days.
Your brother/BIL are gonna flip;)

Sure is and a beautiful job on the handles as well!!!! :D

AL if it were me I'd keep the heaviest BGRS as even a couple of ounces will help improve chopping performance. If their weight is the same or within an ounce then I'd keep the 17" BGRS.
Sometimes a half inch can make a noticable difference in the work one can do.;) :D

AL I just noticed that you said you filed the grooves at the junction of the buttcap and handles. How do you like the way they turn out?
I think they look a lot more finished and I dayumed sure like the fact that the burrs are gone and won't/can't bite anymore!!!!

I agree....They are much easier on the hand after filing. I used a little knife edge file from my Jewelry making days to knock off the burr/lip between the butt plate and handle. I tapped the butt plate gently around the edge with a rawhide mallet and it closed the slight gap made by the filing.

Beautiful wood treatment... if you like that BDC and fullers, you'd love a Foxy Folly.

Al, you did a beautiful job on those handles and I thank you for the pics. With your small collection you already have two wood types I don't have, that is Tuni and Evergreen. I have ignored the Evergreen but that look is fantastic on the BDC and I won't make that mistake again.

I envy you new guys because you have such a wide selection to choose from. Even a couple of years ago satisal and horn was about it, although there were occassional chandan handles as I recall. My first 10 knives were all satisal pretty much.

Steve Ferguson has shown us that with a little bit of work and some tru-oil the satisal can be made to look incredible (I think it was Hollow who did one I believe on a 20" Kobra he donated to Ram's education fund that looked fantastic.) Although I also have a dozen or so satisal handles that Uncle Bill called "glow in the dark satisal" that has beautiful grain in it.

Right now my all around favorite wood is the hill walnut, and I see you have one of those as well.

I am a lousy one to give advice to one who is HIKV infected (I'm like the friend telling you to take it easy on the Heroin as I jab a needle into my arm!), but I'll tell you what Uncle Bill told me once: "Go slow and let's get you what you want." You have to consciously tell yourself that just because you miss a great knife on a DOTD that it is OK because one just as nice and unique will come along another day.

I bought a whole bunch of stuff I am now selling, usually at a bit of a loss, and applying that $ to really unique stuff I really want rather than just buying on autopilot like I used to do. I enjoy it more and appreciate what I have on display more.

You have made a great start, and I hope you are still around in a year because you will have an awesome collection if you keep buying with such discretion (and fixing up those handles!) and I would love to see it.

And I wish I had you for a brother-in-law if that's the kind of presents you give! I usually get a book or a tie...:grumpy:

Regards,

Norm

Thanks Norm,

I just used what I learned here at the H.I. Forum  to finish the handles. I really didn't do much so as not to detract from the way the Kamis intended them to be. I found this forum a couple weeks ago from a Thread over at the FAL Files http://www.falfiles.com/forums/ regarding Cold Steel vs. H.I. Khukuris.

So, I've been collecting a few FN FALs and now Khuks :D
I'm not a big time collector. The FALs are my SHTF weapon of choice followed by a 45acp and then if all else fails a good Khukuri
But, you know how it is you can't just have one  :D :D

Fortunately for me I found this place right before Christmas so out of this initial buying spurt I will keep about 3 for myself and have an excuse for this buying binge so my wife doesn't use one of the Khuks on me.  :D
