Hey guys, I was recently gifted this sword along with a beautiful WW1 "Patton Sabre". Looking at this thing it looks like junk to me, but I thought I'd throw it out to the experts and see what you guys had to say...Thanks in advance, Gary

I wouldn't be so quick to call it junk just yet. I always pay special attention to something that has honest wear. Give us some more overall pics of the blade and the entire sword and both sides of the Nakago (tang).

Yeah, I can't see the pics real well (phone), but if those are Pacific theater scabbard and hilt covers then at the keast you have a piece of history. Tsuba doesn't look military.

I'll call it junk, that is if you consider reproductions junk. It is not a Nihonto or Japanese sword, nothing is right about it. Tsuba is total POS, again a late reproduction. Habaki wrong. Leather covers wrong. You didn't show a photo of one of the most important things, a full length shots of the tang. But I can see enough in the partial shot to know that it is wrong too. Stamp reads Mune, but it is incorrect for Japanese sword. Can't tell if that is the distal end but the mekugi ana at the far left of your photo is new, they didn't even remove the burr after drilling. The patination on the nakago (tang) is contrived and looks horrible.

Thanks guys for taking the time to look at this piece. Just didn't want it taking space in the safe if it wasn't worthy....Gary
