Hi all!
Just an introduction.

Now the Questions ;)

I have acquired over the years a few older Knifes, primarily of the "Hunter/Outdoors man" variate.

One of them was my Wife's Late Fathers' and after cleaning off years of filth on the Blade. I discovered it marked as such:

MARBLE'S
Gladstone Mich USA

It is a Stag Handle 4 pin.
Blade is 5 3/4"
Over all is 10 1/4"

I've seen some Eye raising prices online for this particular Blade. And though I have no interest in selling.
I was curious to your thoughts on restoration to this Knife?

The knife was used and used hard in it's day (as it should) and as a result the blade is needing care
Also the Stag handle is very dry and has cracked in a section and a small piece is lost.

Do you repair this item or leave as is?

I'll wait for feedback before I ask about others I have.
Most of my questions will be along the restoration/ maintenance line of older knifes.

Thank you in advance!!

Clean it as best you can. Oil it. Find or build a shadow box. Display it.

That's what I'd do.

Do you base that on the age/ value of the Knife?
I have two minds with Knifes (and must utilitarian items).
1. Use it for what it's for.
2. Take care of it so you can continue to use it.

That being said however. If an item is considered "valuable" or "rare" etc... My mind set would be to preserve it the best I can so it will at least last as long as possible.
Would you consider this Knife to fall into that category than?

Thank you for your feedback!

Clean it and leave it alone. Knives are like guns and usually retain more value in their original condition.

This may be better answered on the traditional forum; there is lots of discussion regarding the care & maintenance of older knives.

My opinion though is that sentimentally, it's priceless - so do the minimum required to keep it from getting any worse, and store it away or display it. The monetary value will likely not amount to much anyway.

I also have my late father-in-laws' uncle henry from the late 70's. It still has the grime and gunk from whatever he used it on last, and years of pocket carry. I will never clean that knife; as-is is just perfect.

Wish I could post pictures so everyone could see the Knife as well.
Wouldn't mind trying to nail down a date (if possible)?

Make sure to leave the patina. Perfect for display. Give it character. Just like with an old collectable gun. The patina gives it it's old beauty. But definitely fix up the handle so it doesn't get worse

I've only cleaned the blade so I could read the stamp and removed rust.
Blade has slight pitting and is badly scratched from who knows what?

Agreed with Patina. But would like to clean it to a point.
In regards to handle that is my biggest concern. Even if I never intend to use Knife (and I won't). I would like to try and repair handle so it at least does not get worse.

My concern also is the tang condition under the bone as I think it is rusted and if left untreated will just not be good?

In regards to a couple comments about old Guns.
Agreed. But again. I have old Guns I still use and old Guns that are display only.

Marbles is a good company. Believe it or not, my Grandfather's friends' father in law owned Marbles, I am pretty sure he's dead now.

No Doubt. Even at it's current condition you can tell it was/ is quality.
It holds an edge now question!

Pics would be most helpful.... As stated above - once you get the uploading pics thing figured out - post them in the traditional forum. There are a lot of very knowledgeable guys and gals there who have decades of experience with the Marble's brand, and they'd be happy to help I'm sure.

This is what I would do. If you don't intend to use it, clean it up a little and display it. I would not use a knife that old/valuable. No reason or need to. Do NOT take off the patina. I wouldn't really even fix the handle unless you intend to use it. As a display piece I would think it is fine as it is.

It says in my preferences I don't have permissions to post pictures?
Regardless. I posted pictures to another Knife Forum and got this info on the Knife

#46 Marble's Ideal 1918-1924
Also that based on the condition of blade and such, It isn't worth much.
Not going to sell anyway so that doesn't matter. I just want to try and preserve it at this point and possibly fix issues that may be hurtful down the road?

You can post pictures if you host them on photobucket and just post the "IMG" link in your post. Just FYI.

Ok.
Here are some photos.
