I just got the Sharpmaker and also got the diamond stones. I read everywhere that this is a slow system when you first start out if you have to reprofile. My question is how do you gauge when to switch from rod to rod, also switching from points to flats.

First off I am by no means a pro at sharpening in any system. When I first got my sharpmaker I counted 60 swipes on either side for the diamond. Than 40 with the brown and with rods. I got the ultra fine rods and do them for 60 swipes. That's what I did no matter how bad the blade was. Just till I felt I had a good understanding and feel for the sharpmarker. Now I do it by how much "residents" I feel when sharpening.

Take a magic marker and run it down the blade "cutting" the felt. Ideally you have ink on the bevel which reaches the apex. Take a drink of beer

Use whatever rod at whatever angle you've got set. Look at edge with light and magnification closely seeing where the rod has "scraped away" ink. Take another drink

Be careful when you do not see any ink and you think you have reprofiled to the apex. At times there is a faint trace or no trace of ink and you still have not reached the apex.

If you move on to the ceramics before apexing then you are just polishing the shoulders. (I have done this many times). Happy labor day

I would not use the corners, the pressure on that so very small contact area is just too high, no matter how light you go - and - you don't need them. When to switch to the next stone? When the scratch pattern has replaced the previous one or when it is uniform along the blade on the first stone. Also, ,most people would want to create a burr which tells them that there is a new apex.
