I am new to this forum & to knives....Looking to get my 1st knife. Please give your recommendations to a newbie. Many thanks.

Weeeell......you've got a lot of options. Depends, how much are you willing to spend, and what kind of knife do you want? Folder or fixed? Large, medium, small? Personally, I LOVE Emerson, but some people think they're too expensive (Although, I got my mini-7 for about $70). Cold Steel's stuff is good, as is Spyderco, SOG, REKAT, and a bunch of others. But what do you have in mind?

Yeah if you can tell us what your uses/needs and price range are we should be able to give you some good advice, these guys know what they're talking about. Spyderco are the best IMO, they offer great value for money in all price ranges. If you're looking for a fixed, you could do a lot worse than Fallkniven. Good luck. :)

You have embarked on a voyage with practically no price ceiling. :)

There are two schools of thought. You can buy lots of semi-junky stuff now -- discovering and upgrading constantly over the next few years -- or you can save your money and get something awesome which will satisfy most if not all of your needs.

Many of us have bought multiple knives, in the quest for that "perfect" blade. Then, when we do find something that is great, we end up selling a lot of those stepping stones products.

Then again, all the buying and learning and buying again is part of the fun. In the case of a lot of knives there is an aftermarket, so unless you damage them, they should resell OK.

If you're just a regular joe who wants a blade to use, the Buck 110 is simple, affordable, and respectable. Find one customized in BG42, and you'll hold off the steel-envy a bit longer.

But if you're a knife-for-the-car, knife-for-defense, knife-for-hunting, full on steel fiend; well, prepare your family and your checkbook. It's a long road ahead. ;)

First you must decide what your requirements will be for your knife. Spyderco, along with many other manufacturers like Buck, Benchmade, Gerber, Kershaw, Camillus, etc., sell good production line folders and fixed blades.

Spyderco is my personal favorite. You have a wide variety of choices, whether you'd like to start out with the 3" blade of the Delica or the larger Endura, you can rest assured that you are holding Spyderco quality in your hands. Smaller knives like the Dragonfly, Cricket, Navigator, Jester, etc. can easily accomplish any cutting task that you may require. You can check out their website at www.spyderco.com.

It all depends on you. Do you prefer a bigger blade (3-5"), or are you partial to smaller blades say 3" and under? It is also wise to check your local laws in order to find the legal limits on blade lengths in your state. For instance, in Texas, legal is considered any knife blade that is 5.5" or less in length. The option is yours, just check before you buy.

Good luck in your quest for that first knife. :D :D

Cant reccomend anyhting until you give us more info. I mean do you want a fixed blade? folder? big? small? stainless? Carbon Steel? Price range?

Welcome to the forums newbie. My first "serious folder" was a Benchmade Combat Talon III. I still have the knife and it functions like new.

I suggest you consider at a Cold Steel Voyager. These are middle of the road knives in terms of quality and cost. I have carried a 4 inch Voyager as an EDS for years. It is tough, reliable and sharp. It seems to me those are the essential criterion by which an EDC knife should be judged.

This really depends on what you want the knife for, and how much you are willing to spend.

How about an MT LCC? It is a good al around performer as an EDC folder, and looks very sharp with Ti and CF.

If you want to spend a little less money look at Spyderco and Camillus, they offer many knives could be considerd a steal. Especially look into the Camillus EDC in 154-CM, for around $50 new it can't be beat(I need to get me one of these).

CRKT also offers lowered priced knives, and has many unique designs. They are a good value for the money, fit and finish is good, and so is lock up. I would go with the Camillus though over CRKT, as they offer better steel, and from what I hear the overall quality is better too.

My first knife was the CRKT Point Guard and it served me very well, perfect for small jobs, doesn't look too intimidating being whipped out...until i tried to cut some twigs off a tree for a snowman. That's when i realized that the steel on the CRKT's are pretty damn soft. Now I carry my BM Ascent as my EDC and save the Point Guard for when I have to dress up since it's way smaller.

ps: i know that trying to cut twigs off a tree was not a fair challenge, but i'm sure if i had a Spydie or BM let's say, the edge probably would have been able to cut SOMETHING afer that test

Well my first lockblade was the Spyderdo Endura...It's the older one with the plastic clip and Aus 8 steel..not the hardest steel in the world but probably one of my favourites actually...really easy to sharpen even after I've abused it and put it through hell..

I'd suggest as a start to get an Endura or a Delica from Spyderco..nice and light and they are solid performers...

I agree 100% now that they are made with VG10, they are even better.
