I am new to this forum & to knives....Looking to get my 1st knife. Please give your recommendations to a newbie. Many thanks.

12gofst, I don't think the FNG has...
;)

Verzjdejdge.... you're probably better off doing a search for "first knife" in the search function...
OR...
You COULD go to the General Forum and see if you have any luck there, but you oughta have some criteria ... there's literally trillions of knife styles out there.. and when I say "trillions", I mean "many.

Anyhow, good luck,
VG

VG, thats the thing. Actually the FNG has at once previously in this very forum and again in the prac-tac forum.

And again in Knife reviews and testing.

1-2-Go,
Ya know, after I posted here, I noticed that FNG hit General as well.

Maybe I should just go ahead and answer him so's he doesn't have to hit the rest of the forums....

FNG, the knife you should buy is anything from Tim Herman
They start at about $3,500 last time I checked. Don't worry though, Tim also makes knives that aren't so cheap.
:D

Hoping that Tim gives me a commision on this sale,
I remain,

Welcome to the "Battle Blades" forum.

Apparently you've posted similar question on other forums in your quest. And equally apparent is the fact you haven't yet gotten a reasonable answer.

Perhaps this will help you:)

If you're looking for a good, reasonably priced folder you should look to the Spyderco line of folding knives. They offer both conventional straight edge and serrated blades, and a broad range of blade lengths and shapes. The Endura model is very popular and a great utility folder, as well as suitable for self defense. Spyderco Knives are well designed, well made, and found nearly everywhere.

Fixed blade wise it really depends on your needs. KA-BAR makes a series of great fixed blades for a reasonable price, and Cold Steel offers the SRK which is likewise a dandy all-around camp or combat knife for next to nothing.

You can spend hundreds of dollars on a custom folder or fixed blade, even thousands, and still not be much better served than if you'd purchased one of the above mentioned knives.

Finally, this particular forum is for folks like yourself looking for help. You're more than welcome to visit and post, and more than welcome to ask any questions you might have about either training or products. No one has all the answers, or necessarily the right answers, and there's still lots of questions out there coming from all of us.

Heck, I edited a knife magazine for 7 years and wrote 2 books on the subject and STILL look to others for insight, input, and good recommendations:D

I saw that you said you are in the military and will be moving around. Based on this I would recommend a folder right at or slightly under 3 inches in length. This is for 2 reasons. Some jurisdictions have laws against carrying any type of fixed blades. It would be a shame to invest in your SD tool and not be able to legally carry it. Many areas also have length limits, 3 and 4in. being common ones. By having a smaller blade you steer clear of legal issues while still retaining enough blade to be effective. You might consider checking out the Spyderco Gunting. The blade is 2 7/8" long, yet has a full size handle for a good solid grip. The blade shape, IMO, is also a good one. This blade can also be used for non-lethal SD techniques facilitated by the blade apendage and other striking points on the handle. Some do not like this knife or the ideas of its use, but I do. At any rate, get some training on proper use of a knife for SD to use with whatever you decide on.

I know I've been posting in a lot of areas...just want to get good info. I appreciate all the help from you old pros! Again thanks!
