I've been interested in survivalism for the last couple of years, and I'm wondering how to go about starting my education on the subject.

Please recommend what you feel are good "foundation" books or courses, to set me on my way.

Also, as I'm a complete newbie, any opinions/comments on Tom Brown would be very appreciated, as he's in NJ, and I'm in NYC, so he's a very logical step for me.

Thank you.

I have taken a Tom Brown Standard class, and I feel it would be great first step in learning the basics.

If you want to get started quicker, there are several authors that seem to be highly regarded - Mors Kochanski (sp?), and Cody Lundin to name 2. That should get you started.

Check out www.equipped.org. Excellent site with lots of resources.

New York City. Tom Brown is very prolific, and he's in NJ, so he's a very logical step for me.

Of course, NYC is its own jungle, but I think that surviving in the wild is a very important skill.

The Katrina disaster really brought this home to me. I've always been interested in survivalism, but this event really brought it home. I think it's an important skill to know, considering how easily society can fold on itself.
