New… very first post here!

The wealth of knowledge here is quite overwhelming, and this will sound like a real newbie’s question. I got myself a Mini Crooked River (first Benchmade!), and I find it to be fantastic. I was just wondering if I can safely sharpen it on a Sharpmaker or if it needs to be reprofiled, or some other fancy stuff that I wouldn’t know how to do. The Sharpmaker is all I have, with the following stones : Diamond, medium, fine and extra fine. I'm quite used to it, with the few other knives that I have.

If this is not the right forum, please let me know!

Thank you

Welcome to the forum.first benchmade but guarantee it won't be you're last.:).
Sure you can use a sharpmaker.the members here use it all the time.

I use the '40 degree edge' side of the sharpmaker on all my knives (including benchmades). Dont even bother with the 30 degree back bevel side unless you're reprofiling. The '40 degree edge' side should work safely on pretty much anything.

My suggestion is that you mark the bevels with a sharpie and try both SM settings. I have gotten some BM's recently that do actually touch up on the 15 dps setting (Ritter Grip, mini-Presidio 2). I haven't done anything to my mini-CR yet except strop it, so I don't know which SM setting will work with it.

And welcome to BF!

Welcome to Benchmade!

I use the Sharpmaker on all my folders. I hand sharpen my kitchen knives (I cook a lot), but I like the consistent angle and even bevels the Sharpmaker gives my folders. These days I mostly own Benchmades and I find that a regular touch up on the brown rods in the 30 degree slots, maybe 50-100 strokes, keeps them shaving sharp. I rarely use the white rods. It's a lot easier to keep a blade sharp with the Sharpmaker than it is to bring a dull edge back with it, so regular sharpening is the key.

Gentle pressure is important with the SM. Also carefully let up on the pressure as you reach the tip so you don't end up rounding it. I usually do 50 strokes on the angles and 50 on the flats if the blade is reasonably sharp and undamaged to begin with and I just want to restore it to razor sharpness. A dull blade or damaged edge takes much, much more work.

I also learned how to sharpen my Benchmades from the gracious people on this forum. Didn't want to just jump in and screw up that steel which was much higher quality than my other knives. Bought a Sharpmaker (and a Sharpie) and never looked back. Was pleasantly surprised how well Benchmade's higher quality steel (I have 154CM, D2, and S30V) held an edge! That, and leather stropping has greatly reduced the frequency of my sharpening sessions.
