Hello all, my uncle has a collection of 13 Bob Terzuola fixed blade knifes from his Guatemala days. He has asked me to restore them as much as possible, we live in Hawaii and they are about 40+ years old. I have not restored anything this nice, so I wanted to get some input from the pros on the right way to go about it. I want to make sure i'm posting my restoration questions in the right place, so let me know what category i should use. I also thought some people might be interested in photos of the knifes. I just want to make them look nice again. Their main issue is tiny worm like rust on the blades. Some have a grain finish, some are polished. I will attempt to post some pics of the first one i'm working on. Thanks in advance and sorry if this is the wrong category.

Don’t attempt to restore them. It will destroy the value of the knives.

Ok, so just leave them rusty or can I at least get rid of the surface oxidation without ruining the value. The one I posted photos of my uncle started cleaning it already. It looks a lot nicer than the other ones already. I think he said he rubbed it with aluminum foil and gun oil. To clarify, I don't want to take them apart, mainly just clean up the blades.

It's best to leave any cleaning or restoration to the experts. Experts are the people who buy them from you! :)

Thanks rje58, I hear ya. The thing I'm worried about is that my uncle will just clean them himself if I don't and I have a much better attention to detail than he does. He was talking about firing up a sander on the blades. He has them displayed and isn't quite ready to let go of them yet, he still likes looking at them. And there are no experts on Kauai that I have found. Kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place. But I'll have a chat with him about leaving them as is. Thanks again.

If you get in contact with Mr. Terzuola, he might be able to help you out. Definitely won't ruin the value with him working on it.

If he feels like he has to do something, a gentle wipe down with a microfiber cloth, followed by using a microfiber cloth to apply a very light layer of mineral oil or something similar would be one of the lesser of the evils.

You can gently scrub the blades with 0000 steel wool, dry. Then scrub them down with a paper towel soaked with WD 40.
