hello every one.i am a newby to knife making and i was wondering if blood groves are some thing that can be done by hand on a blade or are the milled?i am just getting started so all i have are some assorted files,a bench grinder and a bench sander but none really stand out as what i would use for this.any info would be greatly apreciated.thanks

you can make a drawknife, (or sen, or scraper) and there is a pretty good insight into how it works here; http://forums.dfoggknives.com/index.php?showtopic=2741&hl=scraper

I was thinking about how to make a fuller, and what I came up with was to make a little scraper sort of egg shaped in profile so I could tune the depth and width of the cut. I'd drill a divot a little smaller than the width of the fuller I wanted at either end of the fuller, and clamp a straight edge to the blade along the centerline and then gradually remove material with the scraper. I imagine I would fine tune the ends of the fuller with either a drill or a rotary tool as I worked my way to where I needed to be and then finish it all off with some files and a bit of sandpaper.

Now, take my comments with a grain of salt! I haven't yet done this, however I've spent a lot of time thinking about how I would. Carving steel sounds like fun! Thinking about how to do things, and then doing them, with only the tools at hand is fun too!

I hope you post your results here when you're done.
:)
