Newer swisschamp, lesser quality?

Hey guys. I have a swisschamp with the old style magnifying glass and file. The back springs on it are very stout and none of the tools rub. I just got a newer style swisschamp with the updated file and magnifying GLASS, and the fish disgorger, saw and file all rub. The Phillip's driver has such a weak spring minimal pressure pushes it into the layer and all the other tools don't have the "snap" I'm used to. I'm sending it back but in the mean time I figured I'd get some opinions on the situation and see if I'm merely expecting too much.

Yes, you are expecting too much. They've been working to make their products for less money for a hundred years. Do you really think they could maintain the quality standards of forty years ago without pricing themselves out of their selected market?

I used to have both an old style Swiss Champ and a new one. (The old one was stolen.) I never noticed any difference in the spring tension between the two.

O.B.

I owned more than a dozen of Swisschamp and its variant, unless it's a really old vintaged model filled with dirt and grime, I really don't notice any much difference between them.

It’s just where the tools are tight on the new one. Give it time to break in and it will have good snap.

I have many cellidor scaled Vic SAKs from the 80s till recent, the newest being a White Christmas Explorer. And the only “lessening” of quality that was obvious to me was the change from solid celludor scales to the current hollow ribbed ones. Probably can’t really tell with a hefty model like the Swisschamp, but if you hold a new Spartan & compare it to, say, a 90s solid scale version, you can actually feel the difference in hand.

Yes, I absolutely do.
In my experience Victorinox has the most consistent quality you'll find in traditional folders today.
The reason they can keep the price down while maintaining quality is the fact that robots do most of the work.
