Maybe this has been beaten to death, but I'll post it anyway...
Got my first Benchmade back before theey were even Benchmade... Pacific Cutlery Corp. They were the Barry Wood folders made in '87... probably had a dozen of them and still pick one up every now and then.
My first real Benchmade was the 770. At that time I thought it was the ultimate EDC in a factory made knife. You see, I collect customs and to carry a factory knife was a step down on my "snob appeal". I have to say, the Axis lock is the easiest lock to use one handed.... I'm hooked. All was well until the carbon fiber cracked right near the pocket clip so that the clip wouldn't stay in the right position. I returned it to the factory and they replaced it with a 773. Disliking aluminum, I gave this one to my son and he lost it while backpacking somewhere in a canyon in Utah while doing a NOLS semester. But I was hooked on the Axis and now I can't live without one.
Then got a 960 (steel frame... thanks COMMODOREWHEELER) which along with some customs became my EDC. Larger and more durable than the 770, I quickly "fell in love" with it. I currently have three of them, all in steel, 2 in 154CM and one in D-2. The D-2 version holds an edge better than any other knife that I've ever used.
Traded something I had for Benchmade linerlock with a tanto blade which my son quickly scarfed up from me.
Got a 705 with the silver scales... great size, but a bit too thick.
Just yesterday got my first 556... three of them to be exact. Figured one for me, one for my son and one for his girlfriend. Well, I think I've found my "new love". Seems to be the perfect size for EDC, lighter than the 960, a bit smaller (that's good), and a great blade shape. At less than $60, I believe it's one of the best deals around.
Just my meaningless ramble...
