I just picked up my first Mammoth Ivory inlayed sebenza, a small classic that I have been after for a while.
I held off on a few others while looking for one with just the right color and texture and I finally found one and at a great price to boot!:D
BTW, NOT a safe queen, user all the way!

Wow!! That is a striking Sebenza. I love the color of the ivory. Terrific photos also.

Congratulations on that one.

Man, that is a looker... Not sure I could bring myself to use that one. Congrats on the sweet score.

It's already got some character marks on it so using it and adding a few more won't hurt:)

Here's a closer look at the color and grain, I wanted one that couldn't be mistaken for anything but natural.

That looks like the same knife i sold on ebay last week.If so it was a hell of a buy but had to sacfifice for other obligations. Is it the one i had a leather lanyard and a netsuke on originally?

I'm positive it was mine!that did have great grain pattern and color.I carried it for a long time in sheath and rubbed it down to get skin oil to color.I put a lot of love in that knife!I miss it after seeing pics.

Looks really nice. Great pics!

Do you suppose the mammoth ivory would be tougher and more resistant to scratching than the wood in-lays?

Hey Mike (coolhandluke) I didn't know you were a BF member, welcome aboard! I'm going to post in the GB&U so others know you are A-OK!

This is the one I received from you last week off of the bay..
Thanks again for the great deal on this beauty, It's been riding in my front pocket since I got it.
You took good care of her.

BOK, Someone with a little more knowledge then me on the makeup & hardness of the mammoth ivory will have to chime in. I also believe different wood inlays will vary as to hardness.

Ok, Im curious-could you explain a bit further, what you did do to the scales in order to get that color?

I own two Ivory Sebenzas too, but think that the ivory is a bit pale. The scales on your ex-Sebenza look more yellow-ish, and I really like that... .

Akubra,

As I stated early in this thread, it took me a while to find an ivory sebenza with a darker "old ivory " look to it. Some new ones were darker then others. I passed up a few examples that I thought were to white looking since I thought that they looked more like white or ivory micarta than real ivory.
Since ivory is a bit porous, handling it will allow oils from your skin to darken it over time. Obviously, mine was handled quite a bit by the previous owner coolhandluke.
If it remains a safe queen, it will stay nice and white. if that is what you want.

Oh I hate you :p

That is probably my favorite inlay but I couldn't find it around here locally :p
