After not hearing from Suwandi at Valiant for several weeks I called him tonight (about 11 AM Monday his time) to check on his personal situation and what if any impact the new Australian restrictions on shipping knives might have on his business.
Concerning his personal situation, his Father is still quite ill and he, as the eldest son, had to return to Indonesia to be with his 200 strong extended family for a couple of weeks. He came back to Joondalup last Thursday and is currently trying to catch up on his email communications and his orders. I have an order in for 22 blades, and he thinks he will be able to ship them by Wednesday. So, with a little luck, I should be restocked by March 23 to 29.
Concerning the Australian shipping laws, there is still a lot of confusion. Suwandi's latest information has it that only "swords" will be banned from shipping. He has a six year history of shipping "artifacts" and "machetes" through the same post office at Joondalup and does not expect to have any problems. His friend and business partner, knife author/editor Keith Spenser, has checked with several Australian PMs and assures him that he should be okay. Sounds like there may be a real word game in progress in Australia. "Sword" is a bad word and "weapon" is the worst of all.
Anyway, this is just a note to bring everyone up to date on the happenings in Australia. Sounds like they are not completely out of the woods yet, but they are not down and out either. We'll just hope for the best.
