News item - caste massacre

Only relevant here because Nepal's "Maoist" terrorists have been mentioned here for making Katmandu unsafe lately -

From CNN.com: Gunmen execute 34 Indian villagers in revenge caste killing Murder most foul, along caste lines, by various factions including Maoists in Bihar.

The (much larger) massacres in connection with the partition of the subcontinent were, as I've read it, mainly done with big knives and bludgeons. Now, doubtless in spite of laws, they're using firearms.

Add one part religious dogma, one part social class division, two parts economic disparity, sprinkle a dash of government corruption and apathy. Bake at varying temperature for several years.

One recipie for major disaster.

Isn't it interesting that China is making all kinds of noises about economic liberalization and joining the WTO and whatnot, but that the "fundamentalist" (for lack of a better term) Maoist/communist ideas are spreading all over Asia now (and have been for some time, but are getting increasingly violent now).

Unfortunately, with the rigid caste system these people live under, the desperately poor people probably feel they have no alternative but to subscribe to some sort of radical doctrine or program to change their living conditions. They are probably banned from having many types of jobs and achieving anything like a reasonable standard of living.

Catch 22. It's going to get a lot worse. Unfortunately, much like Ireland, Lebanon, and other places with deep socio-economic and religious problems, I think it will be a couple of lifetimes before it gets any better.

REPEAT

I've always been able to buy guns, so I've never had to kill to get one.

But where they can't be bought by legal means, your first gun *still* only has to be good enough to get you your second gun. Just that someone less alert than you pays the bill. Having to go that way is deplorable.

But I ain't in a position to judge those who have made that choice.

Rusty`s position was US policy with the Liberator pistol. I think it was in the FM.

Bill,
Why don't the retired Gorka's just go in & KICK ASS & clean these Maoist's out? Why do they put up with them? Or do the M's steer clear of them?

Good thought, Jim, but identifying them is quite difficult. They are subversives, guerillas, wear masks and disguises, work at night, use surprise. Might even be a neighbor you chat and even drink with and you don't know. Not as easy to get rid of them as it might appear.

James, thanks for the link. I lived in Bihar as a kid and stories like this were pretty common back then too, though things seem to have taken a turn for the worse in the past few years. A shame when you think that Bihar has such a magnificient history - it was the birthplace of several great ancient Indian dynasties, Buddhism began and flourished here - and now, when you say Bihar, the things that come to mind are its poverty and backwardness, its corrupt politicians and the sectarian/caste/class violence.

And TomF, I think you're right on about the "recipe for disaster" as well as your observations about fundamentalist/Maoist movements out there being around for a while - they have in one form or the other, and wherever they are, violence never seems to be far away.

Sonam,
I too feel a link with Bihar. When walking in the ruins of Nalanda University, I was overcome with the strongest sense of déjà vu I have ever experienced. I couldn't help but think that I had spent considerable time there before.

It is a shame. But it has been said that greed, hatred, and delusion are not new phenomena either. Raj Gir, Bodh Gaya, sermons on the vulture's peak, innumerable wars, the ruins of ancient fortifications. That land has seen many things.

The little beggers have a cellular structure. Not a bad idea. That`s what makes intel more difficult. You can kill them. You just have the guts to root them out and do it.
Their method of terror is to gut the head man and hang him up.Effective.You just have to make them more afraid of you. Then they talk.
The poor villager is a pawn.He is in the middle of the killing. Both sides want body counts.
Neither cares about who gets hurt.
Tracers work both ways.
